Former Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) Kazi Habibul Awal has been shown arrested in a murder case filed with Adabor Police Station in Dhaka.
A Dhaka metropolitan magistrate court granted the application after a hearing on Sunday (October 4). Metropolitan Magistrate Ashraful Haque passed the order.
Earlier, Mohammad Tipu Sultan, a police inspector with the DMP’s Tejgaon Division’s Illegal Arms Recovery and Drug Control Team and the investigating officer in the case, filed the application.
Additional Public Prosecutor of the Dhaka Metropolitan Court Muhammad Shamsuddoha Sumon confirmed the matter to Jago News.
According to case documents and investigation sources, the case was filed with Adabor Police Station over a killing that took place during the July-August mass uprising in 2024. The case was filed on August 23, 2024. The Detective Branch (DB) of police sought to show former CEC Kazi Habibul Awal arrested in the case.
The application said Kazi Habibul Awal served as chief election commissioner from February 27, 2023, to September 5, 2024. During this period, he played a direct role in helping the then government return to power by holding the 2024 national election and tarnished the image of the Election Commission, it alleged.
It further said Kazi Habibul Awal needed to be shown arrested in the case in the interest of a proper investigation and to uncover the actual circumstances surrounding the incident.
The former CEC is already in jail after being arrested in a case filed over allegations of vote rigging and constitutional violations in the 2014, 2018 and 2024 national elections. DB police arrested him from the Moghbazar area of Dhaka on June 25, 2025. He faces charges including forgery, criminal breach of trust, providing false information to influence voting and sedition in the case.
After spending a long period in jail, the High Court granted him bail on September 21, considering his age and physical complications, on condition that he surrender his passport. Later, following an application by the state, the Chamber Court of the Supreme Court stayed the High Court’s bail order. The Appellate Division is scheduled to hear the matter on October 26.
