A man died after falling ill while attending the janaza of BNP Chairperson and former prime minister Begum Khaleda Zia in the capital on Wednesday.
The deceased has been identified as Md Nirob Hossain, 56, a resident of Patuakhali district. The incident occurred around noon on the western side of Manik Mia Avenue, where a large number of mourners gathered to take part in the funeral prayers.
According to witnesses, a huge crowd had assembled even before the janaza began and congestion intensified as more people arrived. At one stage, Nirob reportedly felt unwell due to the pressure of the crowd and collapsed on the ground. People nearby rushed to assist him and attempted to take him to a nearby hospital but he died on the way.
Confirming the death, Sher-e-Bangla Nagar Police Station Sub-Inspector (SI) Md Sharif said that the man felt ill while attending the janaza amid heavy crowd pressure. He added that the deceased had health complications.
