International Desk: Cameroon, Equatorial Guinea, Namibia, Kenya, Lesotho, Mozambique, Tanzania, Palau and Solomon Islands have apparently changed their position on Myanmar's Rohingya and minority issues. These nine countries voted abstainably in the UN General Assembly in 2019, taking no position for or against Myanmar's resolution on Rohingya and other minorities.
At a plenary session of the UN General Assembly on Thursday night, countries voted in favor of Myanmar. However, the proposal was finally adopted by 130-9 votes last Thursday night. 130 countries, including Bangladesh, voted in favor of the proposal.
Myanmar, China, Russia, Belarus, Cambodia, Laos, the Philippines, Vietnam and Zimbabwe voted against the proposal. A total of 25 countries, including India, Nepal, Bhutan, Sri Lanka and Japan, voted for Abstain.
Former Annan Commission member and Dutch diplomat Leticia Vanden Assam analyzed the vote and wrote in a tweet that compared to 2019, nine countries voted in favor of the proposal. According to reports from New York, the vote on the proposal was delayed on a number of issues, including funding for an international framework to collect, preserve and analyze evidence of Rohingya persecution in Myanmar.
Finally, on the last day of the year, the plenary session of the UN General Assembly adopted a resolution on the human rights situation of the Rohingya and other minorities.
He described the pressure as "unreasonable" and said Myanmar would not tolerate any abuse or pressure on the United Nations on human rights issues. Myanmar's Permanent Representative to the United Nations presented a list of initiatives taken in his country. He said Myanmar has been working tirelessly to establish democracy as well as protect human rights.
Rejecting the proposal, he said it would not help resolve the crisis in the Rakhine state. Myanmar's foreign ministry says the proposal for a third committee against Myanmar was decided at the 46th plenary session of the 65th UN General Assembly on Thursday night. Myanmar called for a vote on the proposal before the plenary session decided.
It is reported that the resolution on the Rohingya issue was adopted by the Third Committee of the General Assembly last November despite Myanmar's opposition. Myanmar also opposed the decision of the plenary session on this proposal. This time Myanmar got less votes. The proposal adopted last November was brought by the European Union (EU) and the Organization of Islamic Cooperation (OIC).
The proposal raises new issues, such as the International Court of Justice's (ICJ) interim order, the International Criminal Court's investigation, and the continued deprivation of Rohingya and other minorities in Myanmar's national elections.
It also called on Myanmar to take steps on specific issues, including granting citizenship to Rohingya and creating an environment for repatriation. The resolution lauded the exemplary humanitarian example set by the Bangladesh government under the leadership of Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina in protecting and sheltering the displaced Rohingyas.
