UK Ends Brexit Journey

International Desk: Britain is no longer a member of the European Union (EU). The long 47-year relationship officially ended on Thursday (December 31) at 11pm UK time. This morning Queen Elizabeth II signed the treaty. As a result, the Brexit treaty became law in Britain. The post-Brexit trade agreement between the European Union and the United Kingdom is now in effect as it has become law with the approval of the British Parliament.

Earlier on Wednesday (December 30), the agreement was quickly approved by a vote of 521-63 in the lower house of the UK Parliament, the House of Commons. As a result, there will be no tariffs on trade between the UK and the EU. However, for security reasons and customs clearance, new types of checks will be required at border crossings. New restrictions will be imposed on the export of animal feed from the United Kingdom to the European Union. For example, uncooked meat, sausages or burgers stored under 18 degrees Celsius will not enter the EU market from the UK.

"With this, the future of Britain is now firmly in our hands," said British Prime Minister Boris Johnson.

But British ministers have warned that the new law could put the country in trouble in the next few weeks. Opposition groups called for the beleagured PM to resign. Meanwhile, Emanuel Macron, President of the European Union, called Britain a longtime friend.
