GI Product Tangail Saree, Gazette Today

Own Correspondent: The government is going to declare the traditional handloom saree of Tangail as a Geographical Indication (GI) product. The Department of Patents, Designs and Trademarks (DPDT) will publish the gazette in this regard today.

Zakia Sultana, senior secretary of the Ministry of Industry, gave this information on Wednesday (February 7).

Earlier, an application was made by the district administration to the Department of Patents, Designs and Trademarks of the Ministry of Industry to get Tangail saree GI recognition.

Tuesday (February 6) Deputy Commissioner. Kaycharul Islam send the application and necessary documents through e-mail. Then the hard copy was submitted to the ministry yesterday. In view of this, the Department of Patents, Designs and Trademarks gives this recognition.

It is known that 21 products of Bangladesh have been registered as GI in the last few years. Fresh applications have been submitted for 14 more products. 2 more products are in application process.

It should be noted that after Bangladesh's Tangail saree was recognized as a GI product of India, a new discussion started about it.

In this, the Secretary of Industries has given instructions to give GI registration to the product. Applying for a product, however, does not mean that it is or will be eligible for GI certification. After various tests, it is decided which product will be on this list.

After verification, if any of them get GI certificate, then they will be known in the world as Bangladesh's own products.
