Today is World Polio Day

Sun News Desk: Today is World Polio Day. Polio is a viral infectious disease. In medicine, being infected with this virus is called poliomyelitis or polio for short. In 2014, Bangladesh was declared polio free.

Polio has declined globally. Before the polio virus vaccine was introduced in 1954, polio was endemic in most countries of the world. However, vaccination reduces the incidence in many countries. Currently, only Pakistan and Afghanistan have very little effect of the virus. However, countries are trying to eradicate it through EPI programs. Stakeholders claim that it will be possible to declare the world polio-free in the next one to two years.

The last new case of polio was found in Bangladesh in November 2006. But Bangladesh was not declared polio-free in January 2011 after a new infection was detected in neighboring India. Currently, the successful implementation of the EPI program has made it possible to eradicate the deadly disease polio from the country.

According to medical experts, children under the age of five are most at risk of contracting the virus. Symptoms include fever, paralysis or paralysis after shortness of breath. The virus spreads from person to person and enters the body through the mouth. Can also spread through the stool. Exposure to the virus damages nerves and nerve cells. The body becomes numb as it attacks the nerve cells that control the muscles. Infects the lower limbs more. However, if the rate of infection is high, complications occur in various organs. Injuries to the brain cause death.
