International Desk: US President Joe Biden has approved an executive order imposing sanctions on Myanmar's military following its overthrow of the country’s civilian leadership in a coup.
Joe Biden approved the executive order on Wednesday (February 10th), the BBC reported.
As a result, the United States will keep an eye on the country's military leaders, their family members and the businessmen associated with them.
Steps are also being taken to withhold 720 million in US funding for Myanmar's military. The United States has said in a statement that Myanmar's military has cracked down on protesters.
"We are going to impose strong export sanctions on Myanmar," he said. He also called on international partners to join the effort to put pressure on Myanmar.Mr Biden added that more measures are to come.
Security forces stormed a rally on Tuesday (February 9th), removing hundreds of protesters by truck. Two people were injured and one was on the verge of death.
The United Nations and the United States have condemned the use of force against protesters.
Hundreds of thousands of people have been protesting since the military coup on February 1, detaining top political leaders, including Aung San Suu Kyi, and seizing power.
