Indonesia quake: Death Toll Rises to 81

Staff Reporter:The death toll from Friday's 6.2 magnitude earthquake on Indonesia's Sulawesi Island has risen to 81, the disaster mitigation agency (BNPB) said on Sunday. More than 820 people were injured and about 15,000 left their homes and take refuge in the mountain and evacuation centres.

.The quake hit Sulawesi Island early Friday morning, local time. The magnitude of the earthquake was 6.2 on the Richter scale. Thousands of people were evacuated after the quake.

Aftershocks have been felt several times since the earthquake. The epicenter was reported below the Pacific Ocean floor. However; no tsunami alert was issued.

Dwikorita Karnavati, head of Indonesia's Meteorological, Climate and Geology Agency, said a hospital collapsed in the quake. There were more than 12 doctors and nurses in that hospital. They are thought to be trapped under the rubble. Also at least one hotel has partially collapsed. The quake also damaged Mamuzu's airport.

The Indonesian Red Cross said it was busy delivering medicine and relief supplies to the scene. Several of their teams are working to find people trapped under the rubble.

The quake struck 36 km south of Mamuju on Friday. Its depth was 18 kilometers. Due to its location in the Pacific Ring of Fire, earthquakes often occur in Indonesia.

Earlier, an earthquake measuring 7.5 on the Richter scale and a tsunami in 2018, killed at least 4,300 people. Many of them are still missing. On December 26, 2004, a 9.1 magnitude earthquake and tsunami killed 170,000 people.
