Aslam and Sarwar cleared to contest polls

Court Report

The Appellate Division of the Supreme Court on Tuesday ruled that BNP candidates for the Chattogram-4 constituency Aslam Chowdhury and Chattogram-2 seat Sarwar Alamgir can contest the upcoming 13th National Parliamentary Election.

The order was passed by the Appellate Division led by the Chief Justice Zubayer Rahman Chowdhury on Tuesday following a petition filed by Jamuna Bank.

Earlier on February 1, the hearing concluded on the bank’s appeal challenging the Election Commission’s decision to declare Aslam Chowdhury’s nomination valid despite allegations that he is a loan defaulter.

In the case of the Chattogram-2 constituency, the High Court had stayed the cancellation of BNP-nominated candidate Sarwar Alamgir's nomination and directed that he be allowed to participate in the election.

Sarwar's nomination was cancelled by the Election Commission on January 18 following an appeal hearing.
