Entertainment Desk: Singer Billie Eilish apologizes after videos of her using anti-Asian slurs resurfaced on the internet.
The acclaimed artist felt the flames of criticism and controversy after a video of her singing along to Tyler, the Creator’s “Fish” came up online, where she could be seen mouthing an anti-Asian slur.
With the pandemic-provoked incline in hate crimes towards east-Asians, the fan-favorite singer’s controversy has particularly put her under a lot of heat.
Billie took to Instagram on Tuesday to apologize via a lengthy statement.
In her statement she mentioned not knowing the weight of the derogatory terms she mouthed along as a 13/14 year old (her age the time the video was shot), as no one around her ever used such terms before.
She also mentioned how watching the video now, she is ‘appalled’, ‘embarrassed’, and wants ‘to barf’ at mouthing along to the words of the song.
“Regardless of my ignorance and age at the time, nothing excuses the fact that it was hurtful. And for that I am sorry," she added.
The second half of the spliced video shows Billie sprouting gibberish, which has been interpreted as her mocking the Asian accent.
The multiple award-winning sensation has denied those claims and instead that the second half of the video was just her ‘goofing around’.
“It is absolute gibberish and just me goofing around, and is in NO way an imitation of anyone or any language, accent, or culture in the SLIGHTEST.” she added in her statement.
She concluded her note saying, “Regardless of how it was interpreted I did not mean for any of my actions to have caused hurt to others and it absolutely breaks my heart that it is being labeled now in a way that might cause pain to people hearing it. I not only believe in, but have always worked hard to use my platform to fight for inclusion, kindness, tolerance, equity and equality. We all need to continue having conversations, listening and learning. I hear you and I love you. Thank you for taking the time to read this."
