International Desk: Several people, including a prison director, have been killed in a prison break on the outskirts of the Haitian capital, Port-au-Prince. Violence erupted after the jail was broken into and many convicts escaped. News - AFP.
Haiti National Police spokeswoman Gary Desrosears told AFP: "Divisional inspector Paul Hector Joseph was killed in the violence at the prison. He was in charge of the civilian prison Croix des Bouquets."
Without mentioning the exact number, she added that "many inmates have fled at this time." An AFP photographer said at least six people had been killed in shootings on various streets around the prison. However, the identities of the dead were not immediately known.
Several inmates at the jail said they heard gunshots around noon.
Various pictures and video footage of the jail break escape quickly went viral through social media.
Police were sent to guard the jail and they were able to bring the situation under control in the afternoon.
