Five people were killed when a cargo truck collided with a battery-run auto-rickshaw near Sayedabad Bazar in Roumari upazila of Kurigram on Saturday afternoon.

The accident occurred at around 2:30pm near Shiberdangi Bazar.

The deceased were identified as Sharifa Begum, Lipi Begum, Tuba Khatun, 7, Rishad Mia, 12, and the auto-rickshaw driver, whose identity was not immediately known.

Local union parishad member Ziaur Rahman said the auto-rickshaw was carrying five passengers from Kauniachar towards Kartimari when the truck, travelling from the opposite direction, hit the vehicle.

Three people, including the auto-rickshaw driver, died on the spot, while two others succumbed to their injuries on the way to hospital, he said.

Roumari Police Station Officer-in-Charge Kausar Ali confirmed the deaths, adding that the truck had been taken into police custody.

Legal action would be taken in connection with the accident, he said.
