28 killed as Julia struck

International Desk: Hurricane Julia swept through the Central American regions of El Salvador and Guatemala on Monday killing 28 lives and displacing thousands. El Salvador and Guatemala have suffered the greatest loss of life and damage. Hurricane Julia had largely dissipated after hitting Nicaragua last Sunday, but it gathered strength again in the Pacific Ocean.

Guatemala's disaster prevention agency said five people were killed and buried in a landslide in Alta Verapaz province. And nine people, including a soldier, died while carrying out rescue operations in the nearby province of Huehuetenango in Mexico.

Authorities in El Salvador said that five soldiers were killed when a wall collapsed at a shelter in the city of Comasagua. Hundreds of police and soldiers are conducting operations in the area. Another soldier was injured in the incident.
