Saudi Arabia’s military said on Tuesday that it had intercepted and destroyed a Houthi ballistic missile targeting the capital, Riyadh, following a security alert and reports of explosions in the city.
Turki Al-Malki, spokesman for the Saudi-led military coalition supporting Yemen’s internationally recognised government, said the missile had been launched towards Riyadh by the Houthi movement.
AFP journalists in the Saudi capital reported hearing two blasts.
The Saudi Civil Defence said on X that the National Early Warning Platform had issued an alert over a potential threat in Riyadh. The warning was lifted a few minutes later after authorities confirmed that the danger had passed.
Houthi attacks on Saudi Arabia have intensified, disrupting security and raising concerns over the kingdom’s efforts to attract foreign investment and diversify its economy. The attacks have also reportedly forced the postponement of a major investment conference in Riyadh.
Saudi Arabia has repeatedly carried out air strikes against Houthi targets in retaliation for attacks, amid the ongoing conflict in Yemen between the Iran-backed movement and forces aligned with the Saudi-supported government.
Tensions escalated after a fragile truce established in 2022 broke down in July, according to the report. Subsequent developments included Houthi attacks on Saudi territory and oil facilities, as well as maritime threats and renewed fighting along Yemen’s Red Sea coast.
The latest missile interception highlights the continuing security challenges facing Saudi Arabia as the conflict in Yemen threatens to widen regional tensions.
