Staff Correspondent, Tongi (Gazipur): Two hundred houses have been burned down in a terrible fire in Tongi's Mazar slum in Gazipur. The incident took place at around 4 am on Saturday (November 27 in a slum near Senakalyan Bhaban on the Dhaka-Mymensingh highway. The matter has been confirmed by the duty officer of the fire service Rashed bin Khaled.
"We had a fire in Tongi's Mazar slum around 4 pm on Saturday," he said. It is unknown at this time what caused the fire. However, 9 units of the fire service worked there and brought the fire under control in a two-hour effort.
Besides, Tongi Fire Service Station Officer Iqbal Hossain said there were more than 400 houses in the slum. More than 200 houses have been burnt down. However, no casualties have been reported so far in the blaze.
On the other hand, slum dwellers and locals said that about a thousand houses were burnt in the fire at Tongi's Mazar slum in Gazipur. They also claimed that several people were injured in the fire.
