Withdrawal of Indian Troops from Maldives

International Desk: India has started withdrawing troops from Maldives. NDTV reported this information in a report on Tuesday (March 12) quoting the Maldives-based daily Miharur.

According to the Maldives-based daily Miharu, 25 Indian soldiers deployed in the southernmost atoll of Addu left the Maldives on March 10. With this, India has officially started withdrawing its troops. The rest will be taken back by May 10.

NDTV said either Maldivian or Indian authorities have confirmed the formal withdrawal of troops from the Maldives. However, Miharu said, they have confirmed this information from the National Defense Force of Maldives.

Earlier last week, Maldives signed a military assistance agreement with China.

Incidentally, President Mohammad Muijju came to power in September. He promised in his election manifesto to expel Indian security personnel deployed to patrol the maritime border of Maldives.
