Bollywood actor Sanjay Dutt brought his iconic Munna Bhai persona to the world of political satire during an appearance on Shekhar Suman’s show Shekhar Tonite. Imagining himself as the Prime Minister of India for five minutes, the actor delivered a humorous message to the nation in his trademark Munna Bhai style.
The Gandhi Jayanti special episode, released on Friday, saw Dutt blend humour with references to Mahatma Gandhi, Prime Minister Narendra Modi and US President Donald Trump. His monologue touched on the prominent use of political leaders’ photographs in public spaces, foreign trips and Trump’s tariff policies, while promoting the message of “Gandhigiri” over confrontation.
Before imagining himself as prime minister, Dutt spoke about the current state of the country and expressed his desire to see greater peace in India.
“The people of this country are so lovely. There should be peace here. I can’t feel that peace in our country anymore,” he said, adding that Indians are known for their hospitality and large-heartedness.
He also expressed hope that the peaceful days would return soon.
Asked to imagine himself as the prime minister for five minutes and address the people, Dutt immediately slipped into the language and mannerisms of Munna Bhai.
He began by saying he was happy to take on the responsibility of leading such a large country, joking about the “strange energy” he felt as prime minister.
Dutt then made an indirect reference to foreign trips, saying he would remain in India rather than travel abroad to celebrate his new position. He joked that staying among the people was essential to maintaining a connection between the prime minister and citizens.
Dutt then turned to Mahatma Gandhi and his famous three monkeys, associated with the message of avoiding evil.
He humorously suggested adding a fourth monkey, arguing that simply refusing to see, hear or speak about wrongdoing would not help the country. If people witness something wrong, he said, someone should step forward to correct it.
The actor also joked about the widespread use of the prime minister’s photographs, saying that the country should be represented through images of the country itself.
He added that wherever he might be tempted to put his own photograph, he would instead place Gandhi’s picture, stressing that Gandhi’s ideas were more important than his own image.
Dutt then shifted his attention to US President Donald Trump, whom he jokingly called “Trump mamu”.
Referring to global tensions and Trump’s policies, he said that bringing the country “into the frame” also meant bringing the rest of the world into the frame.
Returning to the philosophy associated with Munna Bhai, Dutt said peace comes through love and that love comes through “Gandhigiri”. He jokingly suggested that Trump should learn a little Gandhigiri.
Instead of missiles and threats, Dutt advocated dialogue and peace, joking that anyone planning to send a missile should send a bouquet first. He also suggested resolving disputes over a cup of tea rather than through threats.
The actor ended the segment in classic Munna Bhai style, saying he was coming to America to give Trump a “jaadu ki jhappi”.
Dutt’s monologue echoed the central theme of Lage Raho Munna Bhai, Rajkumar Hirani’s 2006 film in which Munna Bhai embraces Gandhi’s philosophy and applies “Gandhigiri” to everyday life.
