Staff Correspondent: Due to the continuous negative propaganda, unrealistic conditions, unwavering position and non-cooperation of the UN agencies, it has not been possible to involve the world body in the process of relocating the Rohingyas to Bhasanchar. The report was presented at a meeting of the parliamentary committee on foreign affairs at the parliament building on Tuesday (December 8th).
The meeting discussed the latest situation of return of Rohingyas to Myanmar and their relocation to Bhasanchar and expressed satisfaction on behalf of the committee in the action plan presented by the newly appointed Ambassador to the United States. The parliamentary committee has recommended the ministry to intensify diplomatic efforts for the return of Rohingyas to Myanmar.
According to the report of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs presented at the meeting, the transfer of 1,642 Rohingyas to Bhasanchar was completed on December 4 on the basis of full voluntary consent of a high-level decision of the government. The report also said that most Rohingyas were satisfied with the environment and facilities in Bhasanchar.
The committee was also informed that efforts were being made to involve the UN agencies and other donor countries and organizations in providing humanitarian assistance to the displaced Rohingyas.
The meeting was chaired by the Chairman of the Parliamentary Standing Committee Muhammad Farooq Khan and a member of the Standing Committee on the Ministry of Foreign Affairs. Abdul Momen, Minister of State for Foreign Affairs. Shahriar Alam, Md. Abdul Majid Khan, Nahim Razzak and Kazi Nabil Ahmed.
The meeting was attended by Senior Secretary of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Ambassador of Bangladesh to the United States, senior officials of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and concerned senior officials of the Parliament Secretariat.
It is to be mentioned that more than 11 lakh Rohingyas have come to Bangladesh so far to escape the brutal torture at the hands of Myanmar army. They were given shelter in several camps in Ukhia and Teknaf in Cox's Bazar. Two years ago, the government planned to relocate some of them to Bhasanchar, an island in the Meghna estuary near Hatiyar.
