Staff Reporter: Dhaka South City Corporation (DSCC) is going to organize a kite festival popularly known as Shakrain festival of old Dhaka. If all goes well, 10,000 kites will fly simultaneously in the sky of the capital from different fields and roofs of houses. These kites will be provided among the interested people of the 75wards of DSCC .
According to the tradition of Sakrain, on the last day of Poush, Thursday (January 14), the festival will start at 2 pm and will continue till 8 pm. The festival is organized for the first time and the slogan "Let's Fly a Kite, Cherish Tradition".
A message from the DSCC's public relations office said preliminary preparations have already been made to make the event a success. As part of the event, 75 councilors from 75 wards of the South City Corporation and 25 women councilors from the reserved seats will be provided 100 kites each on behalf of the Standing Committee on Sports and Culture. The councilors will then distribute the kites among the people of the respective wards, who will fly the kites in the air with the position fixed by the committee or on the roof of the house.
In the context of organizing the festival, the President of the Standing Committee on Sports and Culture of the South City Corporation and the Councilor of the 24th Ward. Mokaddes Hossain Zahid said, "Shakrain festival is a tradition of old Dhaka. Over time, this tradition has spread across the country beyond the boundaries of old Dhaka. But in the reality of mechanical life, many of us have forgotten that thisin Festival is a shining example of our heritage. Therefore, we are going to organize this Festival for the first time in line with the outline announced by the Mayor of DSCC for the preservation and promotion of Dhaka's heritage."
Speaking on the occasion, ABM Amin Ullah Nuri, Chief Executive Officer, DSCC, said, "on the last day of Poush is going to organize Saccharin or Dragon Festival. We believe that this event will be a milestone in preserving and restoring the heritage of old Dhaka."
