Additional Police Commissioner Md Shafiqul Islam, chief of the Detective Branch (DB) of Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP), said law enforcement agencies are on alert over the possible return of former prime minister Sheikh Hasina in December.
He said no activities of any political party banned by law would be allowed and that necessary measures have been taken to maintain public safety.
Shafiqul Islam made the remarks while responding to questions from journalists at a press conference held at the DMP Media Centre in Dhaka on Wednesday.
Asked about reports of Hasina’s possible return in December and the possibility of programmes or acts of sabotage by the banned political party, the DB chief said the authorities would take action against any prohibited activities.
“We will not allow any activities of a political party that has been banned by law. We are taking all necessary measures to ensure public safety, particularly the safety of Dhaka residents,” he said.
The DB chief said law enforcement agencies are maintaining heightened vigilance to prevent any untoward incident. If anyone attempts to carry out activities prohibited by law, legal action will be taken, he added.
Regarding security concerns surrounding Hasina’s possible return, Shafiqul Islam reiterated that the authorities have taken a strict stance against activities linked to the banned party.
He further said arrest operations against individuals allegedly involved in such activities are ongoing and that additional measures would be taken if necessary to maintain law and order.
