Imran Khan has been banned for 5 years under Article 63 (1). The Chief Election Commission of Pakistan (CEC) made the announcement by a 4-member bench headed by Sikandar Sultan Raja.

However, Imran Khan's Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) immediately rejected the order. The party says it will appeal to the Islamabad High Court to challenge the order. The party called on the supporters to take the streets.

Imran Khan came to the discussion again after winning a big victory in Pakistan's by-elections last Sunday. National Assembly by-elections were held in three constituencies in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, three in Punjab province and two in Karachi city. PTI chief and former prime minister Imran Khan contested seven of these eight seats. He won six of them. His alliance won the remaining one seat.

After a landslide victory in the elections, Imran Khan complained that the date of the national elections was not being announced as per the instructions of Nawaz Sharif of the Muslim League. He fears PTI's popularity.
