International Desk: Two members of the House of Representatives have called on the FBI to launch a criminal investigation against US President Donald Trump over a phone call with an official in charge of conducting elections in Georgia.
In a letter to FBI Chief Christopher Wary, a congressman from California, Ted Liu, and Kathleen Reese, a New Yorker, said Monday that as a congressman and former prosecutor, "We believe the President is engaged in solicitation of, or conspiracy to vommit, a number of election crimes. .We ask to open an immediate criminal investigationinto the president.".
However, there is no precedent in US history for such a trial. The president can seek pardon from a federal court. No state law allows the president to be acquitted of his crimes.
Central and Georgian electoral laws make it clear that knowingly inciting or encouraging vote fraud is a punishable offense. That's what former New York Attorney General Prit Varara said.
Trump called Georgia Secretary of State Brad Rafensparger on January 2. The audio of their long phone conversation was first published by The Washington Post last Sunday, sparking an uproar across the United States.
The congessmen also accused Mr. Trump of making "a number og other statements solicitating election fraud".
