According to an icddr,b report, 68% of the life threatening coronavirus cases in Dhaka is of the Delta variant.
Among the 60 samples of genome sequence from Covid-19 patients analyzed by the scientists at icddr,b between May 25 and June 7, 41 of them were discovered to have the Delta variant, more commonly known as the Indian variant.
Additionally, 22 cases of South African variants, 2 Nigerian, and 3 UK variants were found.
An earlier study from the Institute of Epidemiology, Disease Control and Research, discovered that 40 out of 50 samples were of the Delta variant, being the main cause of distress for health officials, as the related health crisis continue to escalate.
Although, of the total 40 cases, only 2 were in Dhaka (the rest being in Dinajpur, Gaibandha, Bagerhat, Jhenidah, Pirojpur, Chapainawabganj, Gopalganj, and Khulna), lately, the variant has been found infiltrating Dhaka gradually.
This has lead to much concern about Dhaka’s situation potentially turning as dire as that in Rajshahi or Khulna.
Following the discovery of the Delta variant in Dhaka on May 8, 63 people have died from the effects of Covid-19 in the last 24 hours, adding up to the 60 from the day prior.
A press release from the Directorate General of Health Services (DGHS), has informed that 8 of the deceased, had passed away in their homes.
Of those reported dead, the highest death toll were in Khulna (20), and Rajshahi(13), followed by 11 in Chittagong, 10 in Dhaka, 3 in Barisal, and 2 in Rangpur, Mymensingh and Sylhet.
About 3,840 people tested positive for Covid-19 with the positivity rate declining to 15.44 percent from 16.62 the day before. However, experts have deemed the number of tests done to be too low to depict the reality of the situation.
Restrictions have been imposed in an attempt to abate the situation, in areas under municipalities of Gopalganj and Moksudpur, with the unions of Latifpur and Kashiani.
Despite all measures, data from the DGHS have shown all such efforts to bear no fruit, as transmissions continue to rise.
