The trial of MP Papul has started in Kuwait

The trial of nine people arrested in Kuwait, including Laxmipur-2 MP Kazi Shahid Islam Papul, is set to begin on Thursday (September 18th). He was arrested on charges of money and human trafficking.

Meanwhile, two Kuwaiti lawmakers are facing trial for taking bribes from Papul. They are Sadun Hammad Al-Otaibi and Salah Abdulreda Khurshid.

Among the accused is Maj. Gen. Majen al-Jarrah, a former assistant under-secretary at the Kuwaiti Interior Ministry.

Citing Kuwaiti public prosecutions, the Arabic dailies Al-Qabas and Al-Rai reported that they had been charged with human trafficking, money laundering, bribery and threatening national security.

MP Papul was arrested on the night of June 8 in the Musharraf area of Kuwait. Papul, one of the owners of the Marafi Kuwait Company, has a residence permit.

Based on the allegations of 5 Bangladeshi victims of trafficking, the Kuwaiti prosecution has brought charges against Papul for human trafficking, money laundering and exploitation of business workers. He has been remanded in custody for 18 days and is currently being held at Kuwait Central Jail.

The Bangladeshi MP gave detailed information in remand about how he paid bribes to Kuwaiti officials, which is being published by various local media outlets citing prosecutors.

Papul has also been formally charged with aiding and abetting illegal activities and money laundering.

Al-Qabas reported that 13 people were named as accused during the investigation of the case. Of these, four were dropped during the investigation.

Among the accused, six are in jail, including MP Papul. Two Kuwaiti MPs and a fugitive are on bail.

Papul, who went to Kuwait as a general worker and built a huge empire, was elected as a Member of Parliament in 2016 as an independent candidate. Not only that, he also brought his wife Selina Islam as a Member of Parliament in the reserved seat. Although his Marafi Kuwaiti company hired cleaners, Papul also ran other businesses in Kuwait.

Earlier, Gulf News reported that Papul had a license called "General Trading and Contracting", through which he could trade in everything from children's toys to antique carpets.

Kuwaiti authorities have already seized the bank accounts of Papul and his company. An investigation has also been started against him in Bangladesh.

No statement has been obtained from his lawyer so far regarding Papul's trial in Kuwait.

On July 22, his wife, independent MP Selina Islam, said thousands of workers worked in Papu's company in Kuwait. Working in that organization, many workers of the country are sending remittances of crores of rupees. He is facing problems in Kuwait due to a one-party conspiracy there. Basically a victim of papal conspiracy. All this is being done to tarnish our image.
