Former Indian President Pranab Mukherjee is no more. This genuine friend of Bangladesh died at the Army Research and Referral Hospital in New Delhi around 6:15 pm on Monday (August 31).
The 64-year-old Congress leader was admitted to the Army Research and Referral Hospital in Delhi for about three weeks. He was in a deep coma.
In the evening, Pranab Mukherjee's son Abhijit Mukherjee tweeted, "I am very sad to announce that my father Pranab Mukherjee has died. Physicians have made the utmost effort. I have received prayers from people all over India. Even then I could not bring my father back. I thank you all for being by my side. '
On August 9, Pranab Mukherjee fell in the bathroom of his residence on Rajaji Marg in New Delhi and sustained serious head injuries. He was admitted to the Army Research and Referral Hospital on August 10 due to a neurological problem. Doctors decided to operate on him as he had a blood clot in his brain. The operation was performed on his head on the same day.
The former president of the country tested positive for corona before surgery. Since then, Pranab's condition has not improved. A statement from the Army Research and Referral Hospital on Monday morning said the physical condition of one of the most iconic figures in Indian politics was deteriorating. He is said to be in septic shock due to a lung infection.
For more than five decades, Pranab Mukherjee has been the lifeblood of Congress, one of India's leading political parties. He served as President from 2012 to 2016 during the Congress rule. He resigned as the President of India in 2016.
He held important ministries during the tenure of former Prime Ministers of India Indira Gandhi, Rajiv Gandhi, PV Narasimha Rao and Manmohan Singh. The 13th president received the country's highest civilian award, the Bharat Ratna, last year after stepping down.
