Govt. threatening and pressing them forcefully : Mirza Fakhrul

Own Correspondent

BNP senior leader Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir has alleged that `a faction within the government’ is working against pro-democracy forces. He warning, that attempts are under way to derail the electoral process.

Speaking at a discussion at the National Press Club on Wednesday (17 August) Fakhrul said, some political quarters were raising `new and disruptive’ demands, such as proportional representation, as part of a plan to obstruct elections.

he asked, `explaining these demands is complicated, and they are threatening and pressing them forcefully. My question is, why are they doing this?’.

He also claimed that the ousted Awami League was also engaged in efforts to foil the polls.

Citing a newspaper report, he alleged that, S Alam, `notorious for bank looting’, had already channelled Tk 25 billion from Delhi to fund a plan aimed at halting Bangladesh’s elections and facilitating deposed prime minister Sheikh Hasina’s return.

Fakhrul urged party members and supporters to remain vigilant.

He warned, `If we think victory is assured and everything is settled, that would be a grate mistake’. He also said, pointing to reports of Awami League loyalists assaulting Bangladeshi officials and advisors abroad, including in New York. As followers of Kazi Zafar and believers in democracy, those of us who love this country must unite, set aside differences on basic issues, and move forward together’.
