Delhi Police has designated three new sites for protests and demonstrations in the national capital, while removing Jantar Mantar from the list of approved protest venues.
The newly designated locations are Ramlila Ground, Burari Ground and CBD Ground in east Delhi.
The decision follows recommendations from a committee formed by the Union Home Ministry to identify alternative venues where citizens can exercise their right to organise protests and demonstrations.
Delhi Police said detailed, revised standard operating procedures (SOPs) for holding demonstrations at the three designated sites would be issued separately.
The move comes as opposition parties, civil society groups and student organisations are planning protests and marches around Jantar Mantar, which has long served as a prominent venue for demonstrations in New Delhi.
Among those preparing to mobilise are the Congress, INDIA bloc parties, the Cockroach Janata Party (CJP), the All India Students’ Association (AISA) and the Students’ Federation of India (SFI).
Jantar Mantar has also become a focal point for demonstrations demanding the resignation of Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar, with opposition parties and other groups participating in the campaign.
The venue has hosted a series of youth-led protests since June, spearheaded by CJP founder Abhijeet Dipke. Demonstrations over alleged examination irregularities also became a major focus of the protests, which the report says eventually led to the resignation of Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan.
