International Desk: The death toll from the devastating earthquake in Turkey and Syria has climbed to 33,000 on Monday, reports Al Jazeera.

The magnitude 7.8 quake hit Turkey and neighbouring Syria early on Monday, toppling thousands of buildings including many apartment blocks, wrecking hospitals, and leaving thousands of people injured or homeless.
The latest figures show that 33,181 have died across both countries.

The death toll in Turkey has gone up to 29,605, Turkish Emergency Coordination Center SAKOM said Sunday.
In Syria, the total number of deaths stands at 3,576, including 2,168 in rebel-held areas in the northwest, according to the “White Helmets” civil defense group, and 1,408 deaths in government-controlled parts of Syria, according to Syrian state media citing the health ministry on Saturday.

The United Nations says up to 5.3 million people in Syria may be homeless after the earthquakes. Nearly 900,000 people are in urgent need of hot food in Turkey and Syria.
The United States has also called on the UN Security Council to authorise the delivery of supplies to rebel-held territory through more border crossings from Turkey.

The Turkey-Syria border is one of the world's most active earthquake zones.
In 1999, a 7.4-magnitude earthquake killed more than 17,000.
