6 killed in Turkey-Syria quake

International Desk : At least 6 people have been killed and more than 294 others wounded two weeks after a latest magnitude 6.4 earthquake hit the Turkey and Syria border region, reports Aljazeera.

The quake hit the city of Defne at 8:04pm on monday and was strongly felt in Hatay’s nearby capital of Antakya and in Adana.

The latest aftershock was centred in Turkey’s southernmost province of Hatay at a depth of 2km, the European Mediterranean Seismological Centre said.

Turkey’s Interior Minister Suleyman Soylu said six people were killed and more than 294 others injured.

Turkey’s disaster management agency said a second quake of magnitude 5.8 rocked the region several minutes later. It was centred in Hatay’s Samandag district.

Syria’s state news agency, SANA, said six people were injured in Aleppo from falling debris and a number of buildings had collapsed and trapped people inside.

People fled their homes on the streets and carried blankets to their cars where they are planning to sleep, said Alejandro Malaver of Turkish city of Adana.

Witnesses said Turkish rescue teams are running around after the latest quakes, checking to see if people need help.

Earlier, Magnitude 7.8 and 7.6 earthquakes struck southeast Turkey and neighbouring Syria on February 6, killing more than 47,000 people and leaving one million homeless.
