However, compared to previous years, the pressure of return travel is relatively lower this time.

Many people, who were unable to travel home during Eid time, are now heading to their villages with their families, creating two-way passenger traffic at the city's transport hubs.

While visiting the key points of Dhaka, including the Gabtoli, Sayedabad and Mohakhali bus terminals, Kamalapur Railway Station and Sadarghat Launch Terminal, showed that return travel is proceeding normally.

There are no overwhelming crowds, nor are there signs of any transport shortages.

Passengers arriving at Sadarghat said that their journeys were smooth and comfortable. Although the launches carried a considerable number of passengers, there was no excessive overcrowding, and most vessels reached their destinations on schedule.

Regular activities will resume at government, semi-government, autonomous and private institutions, as well as banks, insurance companies, financial institutions and the capital market on Monday (June 1).

The government announced a holiday from May 25 to May 31 for Eid-ul-Azha.

<![CDATA[The government is planning to build a prison in the controversial area of Jungle Salimpur in Chattogram, said Home Minister Salahuddin Ahmed on Sunday, warning that, the area will not be allowed to serve as a sanctuary for isolated militant groups.

Speaking to journalists after visiting Jungle Salimpur, the minister said, ''Through the politics of corruption or the corruption of politics over the past 17 years, there has been an attempt to create a 'criminal state' within the country, of which this Salimpur jungle is a direct example.''

The minister noted that shortly after the current democratic government assumed office, several criminal incidents were observed in Chattogram. These included attacks on the residences of businesspeople by heavily armed groups and incidents of extortion. Following these events, the government treated the matter with utmost seriousness.

A coordinated joint operation involving law enforcement agencies was launched on March 9 to suppress criminal activities.

Salahuddin Ahmed added, the criminals had established a parallel system of control in Jungle Salimpur through CCTV surveillance and various security checkpoints. This network was dismantled through the joint operation.

However, he acknowledged that in some cases the operation's objectives could not be fully achieved because information had been leaked in advance.

''I assure everyone that no ordinary residents will be evicted from the area; only the hideouts of criminals and militants will be dismantled.''

<![CDATA[The Forest Department has imposed a 3-month ban on the entry of all, including tourists, into the Sundarbans to facilitate breeding and movement of fish and wildlife.

From June 1 to August 31, fishing, crab harvesting, honey collection and tourist visits will be completely prohibited to ensure the safe breeding of fish and aquatic species, conserve biodiversity and protect wildlife.

According to forest officials, the annual restriction helps maintain ecological balance and revitalises the forest's wildlife and biodiversity. Most fish and aquatic organisms spawn during this time, while the forest's vegetation also undergoes its natural regeneration process. To safeguard these ecological processes and ensure undisturbed wildlife movement, the annual three-month restriction will once again be enforced this year.

Md Rezaul Karim Chowdhury, the divisional forest officer (DFO) of the Sundarbans East Forest Division, said, ''This restriction is imposed every year to enhance the breeding capacity of aquatic and wildlife species. Therefore, no one will be permitted to enter the Sundarbans during this period.'' And issuance of new permits was suspended on May 24.

The Forest Department further stated that a proposal has been sent to the relevant ministry seeking food assistance and incentive packages for families dependent on the Sundarbans. If approved, affected households will receive support during the closure period.

The Sundarbans, recognised as a UNESCO World Heritage Site, is home to a rich diversity of flora and fauna, including the Royal Bengal Tiger, spotted deer, monkeys, crocodiles, monitor lizards, and various bird and fish species.

<![CDATA[Police have filed a case naming 42 people, including alleged local crime figure Md Yasin, and accusing another 150 to 200 unidentified individuals over the armed attack and vandalism at an under-construction RAB camp in Jungle Salimpur of Sitakunda on early yesterday (25 May).

The case was filed late last night by Fouzderhat Police Outpost Inspector Sohel Rana, Sitakunda Police Station Officer-in-Charge Mohammad Mohinul Islam confirmed.

Earlier, around 20 to 25 people were detained during a joint operation by RAB, police and APBn after the attack. Five of them were shown arrested after verification while others were released, said the OC.

The five arrested people and Yasin, whom law enforcers describe as controlling the area, are among the 42 named accused, the OC added.

The case includes charges of organised armed assault on police, obstruction of government duties, vandalism of state property, and violations under the Explosives Act, police said.

The attack took place around 2am in the Alinagar area of Jungle Salimpur, where armed assailants opened fire on the under-construction RAB camp before using a bulldozer to destroy walls and other structures.

The attackers also dug up roads at at least four points to delay the arrival of additional law enforcement personnel, according to officials.

The assailants later fled after law enforcers responded.
Law enforcement agencies had taken control of Jungle Salimpur during a major drive on 9 March. A joint forces camp was later set up inside an under-construction building of Alinagar High School, where around 130 members of police, APBn, RRF and RAB have since been stationed.

RAB officials said forces managed to reach the area and launch an operation despite the road blockades. The elite force claimed members of the "Yasin Bahini" were behind the attack.

Home Minister Salahuddin Ahmed is scheduled to visit Jungle Salimpur on 31 May. RAB officials said there would be no security lapse during the visit.

Meanwhile, the Chattogram district administration has sought deployment of two platoons of Border Guard Bangladesh to help restore law and order and recover illegal arms in the area.

The Ministry of Home Affairs approved the request yesterday. BGB personnel are expected to remain deployed there until 31 May.

Although Jungle Salimpur falls under Sitakunda upazila, access to the area is mainly through Chattogram city via the Bayezid-Fouzderhat road and adjoining hilly routes.

The area, comprising Chinnomul and Alinagar, spans around 3,100 acres of government land, according to district administration data. Authorities say the locality has long remained under the control of land grabbers and armed groups.

<![CDATA[A group of 170 Bangladeshis detained in Libya during failed attempts to cross the Mediterranean to Europe has been repatriated.

A chartered flight of Buraq Air carrying the Bangladeshi citizens landed at Shahjalal International Airport around 8:30am on Monday, according to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

The repatriation was carried out under a joint initiative by the Bangladesh Embassy in Tripoli, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, and the Ministry of Expatriates' Welfare and Overseas Employment, with assistance from the Libyan government and the International Organization for Migration (IOM).

According to the foreign ministry, the majority of these individuals had entered Libya illegally with the help of human traffickers, lured by the prospect of crossing the Mediterranean Sea to reach Europe.

Many of them have alleged that they were victims of abduction and torture at different times during their stay in Libya, the ministry said.

The ministry urged the returnees to share their harrowing experiences with others in their communities to help raise public awareness against human traffickers.

With this latest group, at least 893 detained Bangladeshi nationals have been brought back home from Libya so far this year.

The ministry added that efforts are ongoing to repatriate the remaining Bangladeshis currently detained in the country.

According to data from the IOM, the Mediterranean route continues to be highly dangerous for migrants attempting to reach Europe.

As of mid-May 2026, a total of 6,811 people attempting the sea crossing to Europe had been intercepted and detained in Libya.

During the same period, 822 people were reported dead or missing at sea, although data on how many of them were Bangladeshis was not immediately available.

The scale of the crisis was also significant in 2025.

According to the IOM, 27,116 people were intercepted along the Mediterranean route last year, while 1,699 others were recorded as dead or missing.

On 19 May, at around 11: 30 am, the dismembered body of the child was recovered from a flat on the third floor of a building in the capital's Pallabi. On the same day, the police arrested Sohel Rana and his wife Swapna, residents of the flat.

In this incident, the child's father filed a case at Pallabi Police Station on charges of rape and murder. The main accused, Sohel Rana, gave a confessional statement in court last Wednesday. In his statement, he confessed to raping and murdering the child. The following Thursday night, after a cabinet meeting, Prime Minister Tarique Rahman met with the child's family. He assured them of a swift investigation and justice.

People from various walks of life, as well as different parties and organisations, have expressed outrage, condemning the brutal incident. They have been demanding a thorough investigation and speedy trial. Protests and human chains were also organised in various parts of the capital yesterday.

Today, both accused Sohel Rana and Swapna Akter were brought to the court premises and kept in custody. The Dhaka Metropolitan Children Violence Suppression Tribunal accepted the charges against them and ordered the hearing for the formation of charges to be held on 1 June. In the afternoon, both were sent back to prison.

Home Minister Salauddin Ahmed expects the trial of this case to be completed in five to seven days.

He stated this in response to questions from journalists at a dialogue organised by the Bangladesh Secretariat Reporters Forum (BSRF) at the Secretariat on Sunday morning.

The Home Minister stated that the government would do whatever is necessary to ensure the maximum punishment for this crime. He mentioned that the accused was arrested within seven hours of the murder. The accused provided a confessional statement in court within one day. His wife was also arrested based on his statement under section 164.

The government swiftly conducted DNA testing with the court's permission. The testing took three days to complete, and the report was submitted last Saturday afternoon. The post-mortem report has also been received. Combining all these, the charge sheet was drafted by Saturday night.

Referring to the appointment of a special public prosecutor to handle the case, the minister said, Considering everything, we are hopeful that this trial will be completed within five to seven days.

Police said suspect Sohel Rana allegedly called the child into his room after she left her home in the morning. There, Sohel allegedly raped and subsequently killed her.

Later, Ramisa's dismembered body was recovered from beneath a bed, while her head was found inside a bucket kept in the bathroom of Sohel's flat.

Police said locals detained the accused's wife, Swapna Akter, but Sohel Rana escaped after cutting through a window grill.

Sohel was later arrested from the Fatullah area of Narayanganj on Tuesday evening.

The accused gave a confessional statement before a Dhaka court on Wednesday.

It is the highest position Bangladesh have ever achieved in Test cricket.

Bangladesh had previously risen to 8th place in 2018. The ICC updated the rankings immediately after the conclusion of the Sylhet Test.

Bangladesh moved up from 9th to 7th, overtaking both the West Indies cricket team and the Pakistan national cricket team. Pakistan slipped two places from 6th to 8th following the series defeat under Shan Masood’s captaincy, while the West Indies dropped one place to 9th. Sri Lanka national cricket team climbed from 7th to 6th.

After whitewashing Pakistan, Bangladesh’s rating points rose to 78, while Pakistan’s dropped to 75. Sri Lanka, directly above Bangladesh, now have 86 points.

Before the series began, Bangladesh had 67 rating points and Pakistan 89. That means Bangladesh gained 11 rating points from the series, while Pakistan lost 14.

<![CDATA[Police in Oman have launched an investigation into the deaths of four expatriate Bangladeshi brothers. Citing the Royal Oman Police, a report published in the Times of Oman said the four died after inhaling carbon monoxide gas emitted from the air conditioner exhaust while the vehicle’s engine was running. Following the incident, police issued a warning against sleeping inside enclosed vehicles.

Leaders of the Chattogram Association Oman told that on Wednesday evening, the four brothers were travelling from the Barka area to Muladdah in Oman. After 8:00 pm, one of them sent a voice message to a relative saying they were feeling ill. Sending their location, he said they were in no condition to even get out of the vehicle. They were having difficulty breathing and foaming from their mouths and noses. They also called their mother and asked for prayers. Later, local residents spotted the four unconscious inside a vehicle parked in front of a clinic and informed the police. Police arrived at the scene, opened the vehicle, and recovered their bodies.

The four deceased brothers were Rashidul Islam, Shahedul Islam, Sirajul Islam, and Shahidul Islam.

Meanwhile, relatives confirmed this afternoon, Saturday, that the bodies of the four expatriate brothers are expected to arrive in Bangladesh next Tuesday afternoon. The victims’ relatives, the Bangladesh Embassy, and leaders of the Chattogram Association Oman have completed arrangements to bring all four bodies home on the same flight.

Even after three days, their mother Khadija Begum has still not been told that her sons are dead. She has only been informed that they are ill and receiving treatment in hospital. Since hearing that they were sick, she herself has fallen ill. Fearing that she would not be able to bear the shock of the news in her current physical condition, the family has withheld the truth from her.

To ensure that no relatives or neighbours accidentally inform her, her only surviving son, Mohammad Enam (32), has locked the gate of the house. Enam lives with his mother in Rangunia, Chattogram.

Friday afternoon, local BNP Member of Parliament Hummam Quader Chowdhury visited the Lalanagar Bandarajpara Mosque in Rangunia, offered prayers, and spoke with relatives of the deceased brothers. He said initiatives would be taken to bring the bodies home and also promised support for the family.

Upazila Nirbahi Officer (UNO) Md Nazmul Hasan, local BNP and affiliated organisation leaders, and prominent local residents accompanied Hummam Quader Chowdhury during the visit.

Meanwhile, burial arrangements for the four brothers have already been decided. They will be buried side by side in the graveyard. Emran Hossain, a maternal cousin of the deceased brothers, told that the impoverished family had begun to see financial stability through the remittances sent by the brothers abroad.

Mohammad Yasin Chowdhury, president of the Chattogram Association Oman, told, After the deaths of the four brothers, we have been in constant contact with the embassy and the Omani government. About 80 per cent of the process to send the bodies home quickly has been completed. We hope the bodies of all four brothers will be sent together on a flight from Oman to Bangladesh next Tuesday afternoon.

He said the expenses for repatriating the bodies would be borne by the victims’ relatives and the Chattogram Association Oman. Since the incident was not a road accident, the Omani government will not cover the costs. All four deceased were between 25 and 35 years old.

Following the incident, the Royal Oman Police urged everyone not to sleep inside enclosed vehicles because of the risk of suffocation from toxic gas.

<![CDATA[The Secondary School Certificate (SSC) and equivalent examinations of 2027 will begin on 7 January and conclude on 6 February 2027. Meanwhile, the Higher Secondary Certificate (HSC) and equivalent examinations will start on 6 June 2027 and continue until 13 July.

Education Minister ANM Ehsanul Hoque Milon announced the dates for these two major examinations for next year at a press briefing held at the Secretariat Thursday. After the press conference, a tentative schedule was also shared with journalists.

The minister said that, in order to save students’ academic time, the long-term goal is to gradually shift both SSC and HSC examinations to December.

Earlier on Wednesday, in a view-exchange at the Secretariat, students and stakeholders had said that moving the 2027 SSC and HSC examinations to December ‘suddenly’ would not be appropriate.

They suggested that the SSC exam could be held in January next year and the HSC in June. Following those views, the education minister has now announced the specific examination schedule.

At the press conference, the minister said that around 4 million (40 lakh) candidates sit for the SSC and HSC and equivalent examinations, which are crucial for their education and future. In normal circumstances, a student may complete SSC at the age of 16 and HSC at 18. However, it has been observed that it takes until the age of 20 to complete HSC.

In demographic terms, this effectively pushes the nation back by about 4 million (40 lakh) student-years. In that context, efforts are being made to complete the syllabus and reduce session delays, with a gradual reduction of the gap as the goal, he added.

The education minister further said that the government’s target is to make December the ideal month for examinations, both SSC and HSC. Work has already begun towards that goal.

However, he said following discussions with stakeholders, the SSC examination for next year will begin on 7 January and end on 6 February, partly due to Ramadan. The HSC examination will begin on 6 June and end on 13 July.

In response to journalists’ questions, the education minister said that the government is working to introduce a system for evaluating examination answer scripts through amendments to the law. He said the amendment could be passed in the next parliamentary session.

Notably, there is no system for full re-evaluation of answer scripts at present. Only re-scrutiny is allowed now, which checks for errors in addition or subtraction of marks or other major mistakes in marking.

The SSC and HSC as well as their equivalent examinations are the country’s most important public examinations, with hundreds of thousands of students participating each year. At present, a student who completes Class 10 takes the SSC exam the following year, and a similar system applies for the HSC.

For a long time, SSC examinations were held in early February and HSC examinations in early April. However, following the COVID-19 situation, this schedule could no longer be maintained and has been further delayed. This year (2026), SSC examinations began on 21 April, while HSC examinations will begin in July.

Against this backdrop, discussions were recently held at the Ministry of Education in a meeting on the smooth organisation of the 2026 HSC examinations, including a proposal to hold both SSC and HSC exams within December.

However, after the proposal to shift the 2027 SSC and HSC examinations to December was announced, it drew reactions. Even in Wednesday’s formal stakeholder meeting, most participants opposed holding the 2027 examinations in December with some suggesting a gradual transition.

At present, the academic year for primary and secondary levels runs from January to December, while the higher secondary academic year begins in July. The academic session in higher education also starts in July. Educationists have long argued that holding examinations at a fixed time each year would be beneficial, but only if implemented in a coordinated and planned manner.

<![CDATA[US President Donald Trump is seeking China’s support for a possible diplomatic agreement with Iran as disruptions in the Strait of Hormuz continue to affect global trade and industry.

Trump has suggested that Chinese President Xi Jinping has a strong interest in helping to resolve the crisis, as the partial reopening of the Strait of Hormuz has not fully restored shipping and the situation continues to affect Chinese industry.

Although China has been less affected because of its strategic oil reserves, Beijing does not want the disruption to continue.

There have been suggestions that China could act as a guarantor in a possible agreement by taking custody of Iran’s enriched uranium or securing Iranian commitments on nuclear weapons for a specified period.

However, China has traditionally avoided direct involvement in overseas conflicts. Beijing may also see some advantage in allowing Trump to deal with domestic political pressure and the economic impact of the crisis in the United States.

China is considered to have significant leverage with Tehran. Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi visited Beijing last week for talks.

Trump also has leverage in his dealings with China. He has paused a $14 billion US arms package for Taiwan and could scale it back further if he believes Beijing is helping to secure an agreement with Iran.

No immediate breakthrough is expected during Trump’s visit.

Trump’s primary goal is to leave Beijing with an economic success, although a diplomatic breakthrough on Iran would also be a significant outcome. China may play an important role in achieving that objective.

<![CDATA[The government has undertaken the ‘Padma Barrage (1st Phase)’ project involving an estimated cost of over Tk 344.97 billion to restore major river systems, reduce salinity intrusion and strengthen irrigation and ecological sustainability across large parts of the country.

The government approved the mega project at a meeting of the Executive Committee of the National Economic Council (ECNEC) held today at the Cabinet Division Conference Room at Bangladesh Secretariat with ECNEC Chairperson and Prime Minister Tarique Rahman in the chair.

Recommended by the Planning Commission, the project was placed before the day's ECNEC meeting for approval aimed at reviving river systems, reducing salinity intrusion in the southwest, improving irrigation facilities, and restoring ecological balance in the Sundarbans.

The project, undertaken by the Ministry of Water Resources and to be implemented by the Bangladesh Water Development Board (BWDB), has been estimated at over Tk 344.97 billion and will be fully financed through government funding (GoB grant). The implementation period has been set from July 2026 to June 2033.

Talking to reporters after the day's ECNEC meeting, Water Resources Minister Md. Shahiduddin Chowdhury Anee termed this Padma Barrage project as an important one for the nation, adding that it would benefit one thirds of the country's area and nearly around 70 million people. "Since this project has huge public importance and was framed considering the interests of people, it was approved by the ECNEC."

According to the Planning Commission, the project will cover 19 districts under Khulna, Dhaka, Rajshahi and Barishal divisions.

The project has been designed to restore the flow and navigability of major river systems, including the Hisna-Mathabhanga, Gorai-Madhumati, Chandana-Barashia, Baral and Ichamati rivers, which have experienced severe degradation over the decades.

Officials said the project also aims to reduce salinity intrusion in the southwestern districts of Satkhira, Khulna and Bagerhat, ensure freshwater supply for the Sundarbans ecosystem, improve biodiversity conservation, reduce waterlogging in areas including Bhobodah in Jashore, enhance drainage systems, recharge groundwater and reduce arsenic contamination.

The project is also expected to expand irrigation facilities in southwestern, mid-western and northwestern regions through support to the ongoing Ganges-Kobadak (G-K) Irrigation Project and the proposed North Rajshahi Irrigation Project. In addition, the initiative is expected to generate employment opportunities and facilitate planned land development and urbanization.

The Planning Commission said the project is consistent with the government's Election Manifesto-2026, particularly commitments related to implementing the Padma Barrage, preventing river erosion, conserving water resources, reducing salinity in agricultural lands, ensuring flood protection, restoring natural water flow through dredging programs and improving irrigation efficiency.

Under the project, a 2.1-kilometre main Padma Barrage along with associated infrastructure will be constructed. The infrastructure includes 78 spillways, 18 undersluices, 2 fish passes, navigation locks, guide embankments and approach embankments.

The project will also include construction of Gorai, Chandana and Hisna offtake structures, dredging of 135.60 kilometres of the Gorai-Madhumati River system, re-excavation of 246.46 kilometres of drainage channels in the Hisna river system and construction of 180 kilometres of afflux embankments.

Two hydropower plants are also planned under the project with combined generation capacity of 113 megawatts.

Once the project is implemented, it is expected to contribute 0.45 percent to the country's GDP with a direct annual expected return of Tk 80 billion. Besides, necessary irrigation water facilities would be ensured for around 2.88 million hectares of net farm land in greater Kushtia, Faridpur, Jashore, Khulna, Barishal, Pabna and Rajshahi regions side by side the barrage would help retain 2900 million cubic meter water in the Padma River.

According to the project background paper, Bangladesh's southwestern and northwestern Padma-dependent areas account for nearly 37 per cent of the country's territory and are home to around one-third of the population.

The document noted that India constructed the Farakka Barrage in West Bengal during the 1970s to divert 35,000-40,000 cusecs of water from the Padma/Ganges during the dry season to the Bhagirathi-Hooghly River system in order to improve navigability of the Kolkata Port.

As a result of upstream water withdrawal at Farakka, dry-season flow in the Padma River within Bangladesh has declined significantly, causing major river systems in the southwest and northwest to dry up. Consequently, agriculture, fisheries, forestry, navigation, domestic water availability and the broader ecosystem in these regions have been severely affected.

The Planning Commission observed that reduced freshwater flow has also increased salinity levels in rivers and canals in the southern region during the dry season, posing growing threats to livelihoods, biodiversity and the Sundarbans ecosystem.

The commission emphasized that sustainable water resource management is essential for increasing agricultural, forestry and fisheries productivity and ensuring balanced economic growth in greater Rajshahi, Pabna, Kushtia, Jashore, Khulna, Faridpur and Barishal regions, where the Padma remains the primary source of surface freshwater.

<![CDATA[Prime Minister Tarique Rahman today Tuesday (12 may) called upon the university students to help maintain stability on the campuses to build the nation and move the country forward.

The premier made the call while exchanging views with Dhaka University (DU) students at Professor Muzaffar Ahmed Chowdhury Auditorium at the Social Sciences Faculty on the campus here this noon.

Tarique Rahman also urged students to learn a third language in addition to Bangla and English so that they can avail employment opportunities in different countries across the world.
Around 150 students took part in the event.

At the programme, the Prime Minister responded to different questions from the students regarding accommodation shortage in dormitories and inadequate number of seats in university libraries.

Replying to a question from Kaberi Azad, a master’s student of the Department of Drawing and Painting, Tarique Rahman said political stability is essential for building institutions and ensuring sustainable national development.

People expect rapid change and development, but everything has to be built gradually within a stable environment, he added.

For that, a stable environment is necessary, and I believe every student can play an important role in this regard, the premier said, urging the students to build public opinion gradually in this regard through social media or any other platforms.

It is natural that the political parties will engage in politics. However, the main center of politics should be parliament. We have done many things through street politics. But now stability must come. Politics should move to parliament. Nothing can be built simply through street agitation, he said.

The Prime Minister emphasised the importance of discussion, dialogue and thoughtful decision to build the country.

To build something, stability is essential. Discussion is necessary. We must think carefully before taking action. We need your (university students) cooperation in this regard because the future is yours. You have to be strong on these issues and be vocal in protest when necessary, Tarique Rahman said, addressing the DU students.

Earlier, the Prime Minister inaugurated a daylong national workshop at Nabab Nawab Ali Chowdhury Senate Bhaban on the DU campus this morning.

The University Grants Commission (UGC) organised the workshop titled `Transforming Higher Education in Bangladesh: Roadmap to Sustainable Excellence’ with the aim of making the country’s higher education system more modern, inclusive and sustainable.

<![CDATA[Reaffirming the government’s uncompromising stance against corruption, terrorism and misrule, Prime Minister Tarique Rahman today, Monday (11 nay), directed police officials to treat offenders strictly as criminals, regardless of their political identity.

While performing duties to combat corruption and terrorism, many times you may face pressure for their political identity and influence. Today, I want to make it clear that you should not consider anyone’s political identity. Whoever commits a crime must be treated as a criminal, he added.

The prime minister further said, The application of law should be equal for all. You are not the protectors of any individual or political party; rather you are the protectors of the law. You should perform your duties to serve the state and the people as well.

Tarique Rahman, also ruling BNP chairman, made the remarks while addressing senior police officers at the Shapla Hall of the Prime Minister’s Office (PMO) in the capital this morning, Monday, on the occasion of Police Week 2026.

Noting that the role of police is indispensable in building a strong, accountable, lawful and people-friendly state system, the prime minister reiterated that the government does not want to compromise with corruption, terrorism and misrule.

At this moment, you are playing a direct role in maintaining law and order at field level across the country. So, if you can successfully fulfill the responsibilities entrusted with you, the current government will also move one step forward toward establishing a safer Bangladesh. Despite our limitations, if we can move forward utilising our capabilities, we will succeed, he said.

Stating that the types of crimes have increased due to technological advancement and changing patterns of crime, the prime minister said, As the patterns of crime have changed, the scope of police activities has also become broader and more extensive. So, police operations are no longer limited to cities, towns or districts as they were decades ago.

Transnational organised crime is now a global reality, Tarique Rahman said, adding, Therefore, every one of our police officers needs to be multi-skilled. This is the demand of the time. In such a reality, not just certain positions, but every post in the police administration is very important. Thus, it is important to have a professional mindset to work in all positions in the administration.

About the posting based on personal preference, he said if anyone compromises professionalism only for promotion or posting in his or her preferred places, he or she may gain temporary satisfaction, but it is still a compromise of professionalism.

Therefore, my special request to you is that you should carry out whatever responsibilities are assigned to you in the police administration with seriousness. Only then will we be able to ensure an efficient, dynamic and professional police administration, the prime minister said.

Reminding that power is not permanent, he said, No government is permanent - we are in government for five years. Likewise, no administrative or police position is permanent for anyone. That’s why I do not want to treat today’s meeting merely as a formality. Rather, let this meeting become a moment of important commitment for the future direction of maintaining law and order in the country.

Emphasising that there is no alternative to an efficient, brave, honest and impartial police administration for a government’s success, the prime minister said, When people face any danger, they first go to the police. I believe that if the police act sincerely, many incidents can be resolved at an early stage through legal and strategic actions.

Referring to the post-5 August situation, he said over the past one and a half years, the police have strategically handled various difficult situations and have successfully controlled mob violence in many cases.

Stating that the government wants to transform the police into a truly people-friendly force, Tarique Rahman said this government wants a police administration that will be people-friendly and trusted by citizens.

In any country, people generally consider the police as a mirror of the government. Therefore, when the police succeed, it is also treated as the success of the government, he added.

Stressing that the relationship between the police and the people should be both lawful and humane, the prime minister said, Alongside other duties, a significant amount of your time is spent dealing with political instability, and that too is part of your responsibility.

The current government of course wants to ensure democratic political rights for the people. However, we all must remain alert so that no one can disrupt communal harmony or engage in sabotage acts, he added.

Reiterating that the government will fully implement its election manifesto and the July Charter, the prime minister said there should be no confusion that this government is firmly committed to implementing every clause and every promise of the election manifesto and the July Charter signed before the people.

The government’s goal is to bring every citizen regardless of their political beliefs under the protection of the state’s social security framework, he said, adding, The safety of the people must be the police’s first consideration. Therefore, they must carry out the responsibilities assigned to them with seriousness and sincerity. Only then we will be able to build an efficient, dynamic, and professional police force.

The prime minister noted that economic inequality is one of the major causes behind criminal activity in society. Therefore, after assuming the office, this government has undertaken various initiatives to reduce economic disparity and ensure social and economic security for the citizens, he said.

Stating that the government will continue its work to ensure welfare of the police, Tarique Rahman said, Honesty, merit, and efficiency will be the core principles in recruitment, transfers, and postings in the administration. We know police duties are not confined to fixed hours.

The way people evaluate the government largely depends on police behaviour and activities, he said, adding, The state expects honesty, efficiency, service, justice, professionalism, and humanity from the police. If you can uphold these values, then the slogan- ‘Amaar Police, Amar Desh, Sobar Agee Bangladesh (My Police, My Country; Bangladesh First)’- will truly be successful and meaningful.

Let’s all move forward from our respective positions for the country, the nation, and the people, the prime minister said.

The programme began with the recitation from the religious scripts. A documentary was screened highlighting the sacrifices and contributions of police members during the Liberation War and in national crises, as well as initiatives taken by Shaheed President Ziaur Rahman and Begum Khaleda Zia to modernise the police force.

At the event, police officials presented their various demands before the prime minister and assured that Bangladesh Police is always ready to support the government in maintaining peace and order in the country.

Home Minister Salahuddin Ahmed, Home Secretary Manzur Morshed Chowdhury, Inspector General of Police (IGP) Md Ali Hossain Fakir and Additional IGP AKM Awlad Hossain spoke at the programme.

Later, the prime minister took part in a photo session with police officers in front of the Tiger Gate of the PMO.

Earlier, Prime Minister Tarique Rahman opened the four-day Police Week-2026 on Sunday through a colorful ceremony at the Rajarbagh Police Lines ground in the capital.

Riyad Rashid was the son of Abdur Rashid from Majhirkona village in Jafarabad union of Karimganj upazila in the district. News of his death has cast a shadow of grief over the family home.

Family sources said that around 7:00 pm yesterday Friday, Riyad Rashid’s friend Limon Dutta informed them of the death through Facebook Messenger. Limon Dutta, a resident of Narsingdi district, had been in the same military camp in Russia with Riyad.

Riyad’s cousin Zahirul Islam said Limon Dutta told them that a drone strike took place on 2 May near the Ukraine border controlled by Russia. Two Bangladeshi soldiers and one Nigerian soldier were killed in the attack, while three others were injured. Limon Dutta himself lost a leg in the strike and is currently undergoing treatment at a hospital there. Yesterday, after confirming Riyad Rashid’s death, Limon informed the family.

It was learned that Riyad was the fourth among five siblings. He had gone to Russia in October 2024 to work for a company. On 7 April this year, Riyad and many other Bangladeshis joined the Russian army. His batch number was 735.

Zahirul Islam further said the family last spoke with Riyad Rashid on 28 April. Riyad’s body has still not been found.

Riyad Rashid’s father, former teacher of Jafarabad High School Abdur Rashid, said tearfully, Riyad did not tell me about joining the army. Had I known, I would never have allowed my son to join. We still cannot find his body. They say it may have been completely destroyed in the drone strike. How can a father endure such pain?

Chairman of Jafarabad union Abu Sadat Md Sayem said, Riyad Rashid was like a younger brother. After hearing the news, I went to his home. The entire family is devastated with grief. I do not know how to console them in this situation. The government should stand beside the family.

Officer in charge of Karimganj Police Station Md Emranul Kabir said police visited Riyad Rashid’s home after receiving the news. They confirmed the death through family sources.

<![CDATA[Suvendu Adhikari was elected as Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) legislature party leader today friday (8 May), which paved the way for him to take oath as chief minister of West Bengal.

I announce Suvendu Adhikari as the leader of the BJP legislature party in West Bengal, senior BJP leader and Indian Home Minister Amit Shah told reporters in Kolkata.

Shah's announcement came after a meeting of the party's legislature wing. It was Shah who proposed the name of the 55-year-old Suvendu as the leader of the legislature party.

Suvendu will replace Mamata Banerjee as chief minister.

The swearing-in ceremony of the first BJP government in the state will be held tomorrow (9 May) at Brigade Parade Ground in central Kolkata.

The BJP won 207 of the 294 seats in the assembly, ending the 15-year rule of the Trinamool Congress in Bengal.

Suvendu Adhikari defeated Mamata Banerjee in the Bhabanipur constituency in south Kolkata, adding to his earlier victory over her in Nandigram in 2021.

Shah was actively involved in the process of selecting BJP's new chief minister in Bengal and had been appointed the party's central observer for the state.

We will give our best for the development of West Bengal, Shah said.

He added that the BJP's victory in the West Bengal polls was very significant.

Our responsibility has increased with this huge mandate, Shah said. I also want to say that the expectations the people of Bengal have placed on us and the mandate they have given with hope and trust, we will make every effort to ensure that their faith is not broken in any way.

He added, There should be no shortcomings in our work. It is the responsibility of every BJP worker to move forward with the goal of building a Sonar Bangla and to fulfill the aspirations of the people of Bengal… It is now our duty to fulfill the promises made by Modi to the people of Bengal and to dedicate our best efforts in the service of the people.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Shah, BJP President Nitin Nabin and chief ministers from NDA-ruled states are expected to attend the swearing-in ceremony.

Preparations for the event have already begun in Kolkata, with senior officials reviewing arrangements at Brigade Parade Ground.

Discussions are also underway regarding cabinet composition, portfolio allocation and governance priorities for the incoming administration.

The BJP's victory in Bengal is being viewed as the party's biggest political breakthrough in eastern India and a major shift in the state's political landscape.

After the oath-taking ceremony, the new chief minister, along with his deputies and select dignitaries, will head to the 250-year-old Writers' Buildings in central Kolkata to symbolically begin his tenure from the second floor of the state secretariat.

He will then move to the state assembly, located about 1.5 kilometres away, where he will operate until renovation work at his chamber in Writers' Buildings is completed.

                <![CDATA[The government has declared a seven-day holiday for Eid-ul-Adha, from 25-31 May.

The decision was announced following a Cabinet meeting held at the Secretariat tonight (7 May) with Prime Minister Tarique Rahman in the chair.

However, the weekly holiday on Saturday (23 May) has been cancelled and offices will remain open.

The information was disclosed in a press release issued by the Cabinet Division.

Besides, the cabinet meeting approved the draft of the `National Public Toilet Policy 2026.’

Its main objectives are to raise public awareness regarding the use, maintenance and cleanliness of public toilets; ensure easy access to hygienic and standard public toilet facilities across the country to improve public health and sanitation standards; and guarantee user-friendly toilet facilities for women, children, persons with disabilities, the elderly, and marginalised communities.

In addition, the policy aims to ensure effective management models and financing for the long-term functionality and sustainability of the public toilet system, as well as establish effective mechanisms for monitoring, evaluating, and updating the policy as needed to keep it relevant over time.

To raise awareness among students about hygienic toilet usage, the Ministry of Education, the Ministry of Primary and Mass Education, the Local Government Division, the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare, and the Ministry of Information and Broadcasting will undertake necessary initiatives.

Infrastructure development projects must include the construction of separate toilets for women. Construction of septic tanks for waste storage in all toilets will be mandatory, and under no circumstances will toilet waste be allowed to flow into rivers, canals, wetlands, or other water bodies and cause water pollution.

<![CDATA[The government has decided to withdraw all army personnel deployed in field-level duties across the country by June, following a decision taken at a meeting of the law and order-related core committee.

The final phase of withdrawal will begin on 6 June, starting with remote districts, followed by divisional cities and major districts in phases, reports Prothom Alo, citing meeting sources. All troops are expected to return to barracks within the month.

The decision came at the first meeting of the reconstituted core committee held yesterday (5 May) after the formation of the new government following the 13th parliamentary election.

The committee, chaired by Home Affairs Minister Salahuddin Ahmed, was reformed on 21 April to assess the law and order and internal security situation and determine necessary actions.

Senior officials, including the inspector general of police, Dhaka Metropolitan Police acting commissioner and director general of Border Guard Bangladesh, attended the nearly two-and-a-half-hour meeting.

Army personnel were initially deployed on 19 July 2024 during nationwide unrest triggered by protests over public sector job quota reforms. Following the fall of the Awami League government on 5 August amid mass protests and the subsequent collapse of the police force, troops remained in the field under the interim administration, which later granted them limited judicial powers in September.

Army Chief General Waker-Uz-Zaman had earlier indicated that the military preferred to return to barracks once the situation stabilised and the police force was reorganised. A gradual withdrawal had begun in November last year.

Despite the election period, army members remained deployed across the country. Currently, around 17,000 personnel are still engaged in field duties, according to the Prothom Alo report.

The defence ministry had repeatedly requested their withdrawal, citing fatigue among personnel after prolonged deployment.

The meeting also discussed other issues, including extortion, anti-narcotics drives and law enforcement reforms. It was decided that cases would be filed against those involved in extortion, regardless of political affiliation.

Participants also reviewed cases involving journalists arrested following the July Uprising, with a decision not to oppose bail for those not accused of serious offences and to avoid harassment if they seek to travel abroad.

The committee further decided to cancel firearm licences issued during the previous government's tenure and approved providing security personnel to administrators of Dhaka North and South City Corporations.

Discussions were also held on enhancing border security in light of political developments in India's West Bengal, as well as on police uniform changes. The existing uniform-navy blue shirts and khaki trousers-will remain unchanged.

The home ministry is expected to formally notify the defence ministry of the withdrawal decision.

He made the remarks after a meeting with a delegation led by Assistant US Trade Representative for South and Central Asia Brendan Lynch in the capital.

Responding to a question on the conditions of the deal, the foreign minister said open discussion on such agreements is important. It is very good that there is discussion on this, and any agreement should be open to debate.

We are not the only country to sign such agreements. Other countries around the world have done the same, said the foreign minister.

He cited examples, saying that countries like Indonesia have agreed to even higher numbers of similar provisions.

So, when you read Bangladesh's agreement, you should read it alongside those of Indonesia, Vietnam, Cambodia and others. That way, you will be able to better understand the context, he added.

<![CDATA[Seventeen children have died from measles and measles-like symptoms within a 24-hour period—the highest single-day toll recorded so far—according to the Directorate General of Health Services (DGHS). The deaths occurred between 8am Sunday and 8am Monday (4 May), as the country continues to grapple with a severe outbreak.

During the same period, 1,456 patients with measles-like symptoms were admitted to hospitals nationwide.

Of these, 154 cases were laboratory-confirmed as measles.

So far this year, at least 52 children have died from confirmed measles infections in Bangladesh. In addition, 259 children have died with symptoms consistent with measles.

DGHS data shows that between 15 March and 04 May, a total of 5,467 measles cases were confirmed through laboratory testing.

According to the latest health bulletin, 41,793 suspected measles cases have been identified nationwide. Of these, 25,151 patients have already been discharged after receiving treatment.

Public health expert M Mushtuq Husain told, Deaths begin to decline about a month after infections start falling. We are still not seeing signs of infections decreasing. The outbreak remains at its peak, so there are no immediate signs of improvement.

He added, Given the current measles situation, a public health emergency should be declared so that everyone can work freely in their respective roles. But the government is not doing that. Even after Covid, we still did not learn how to respond properly to an epidemic.

Dr Mushtuq Husain said children with fever should be isolated quickly. This would help ensure treatment while also reducing transmission.

But the reality is that many poor families in the country live with several people in one room. If one person is infected, the disease spreads rapidly to others. Therefore, arrangements should be made to monitor infected children at upazila health complexes or city corporation hospitals, he said.

Health Minister Sardar Md Sakhawat Hossain said at an event yesterday that measles infections would begin to decline within the next four to five days.

It usually takes around three weeks for a vaccine to become effective. However, due to the current measures, the outbreak will come under control soon, he said.

The Health Minister said that if ICU services could be ensured at all district hospitals, pressure on central hospitals would be reduced significantly.

He added that specialised wards had already been set up to deal with the measles outbreak, and there were plans to increase their number depending on the situation.

The Health Minister said the previous government had not left an adequate stock of vaccines. However, due to the current government's diplomatic efforts, friendly countries and donor agencies had extended support.

He said a large shipment of vaccines would arrive in the country on 6 May.

<![CDATA[Prices of essential commodities in the capital Dhaka markets have been rising, with traders citing rainfall and increased transportation costs as key reasons. From meat, fish, and vegetables to eggs, rice, lentils, and edible oil—almost all categories are experiencing upward pressure. The prices of broiler chicken, pangas fish, and beef are moving beyond the reach of ordinary consumers, while hardly any vegetables are available below 60 taka per kg.

Overall, higher transportation costs have directly impacted production and supply chains. While traders blame rain and rising fuel prices, consumers complain that artificial shortages are being created to justify unreasonable price hikes.

In this situation, the cost of living for lower- and middle-income groups has come under increased strain, raising fresh concerns about market management and oversight.

On Friday (May 1), visits to several markets in the capital revealed continued price increases in essential goods.

Among vegetables, prices of onions, cucumbers, eggplants, chilies, and green papaya have increased further over the past week. Prices of broiler chicken and eggs have also risen. In grocery items, sugar, coarse lentils, and polao rice have become more expensive. although the price of bottled soybean oil has been raised, supply in the market has yet to normalize.

Traders said that recent rainfall has disrupted the normal supply of vegetables. In addition, higher fuel prices have increased transportation costs, which has affected vegetable prices.

Market observations show that prices of at least nine vegetables have risen in the past week. The sharpest increase was seen in cucumbers, which jumped from 30 taka per kg to 80–100 taka for hybrid varieties, with local varieties costing even more. Prices of eggplant, ridge gourd, snake gourd, sponge gourd, and tomatoes have increased by 10–15 taka per kg. Green papaya and chilies have risen by 20 taka, now selling at 80–100 taka per kg.

According to the Department of Agricultural Marketing, compared to last month, cucumber prices have risen by 111%, green papaya by 87%, local tomatoes by 25%, and eggplants by 7%.

Onion prices have also increased by 5 taka per kg over the past week, now selling at 40–45 taka per kg. However, onions had been sold at very low prices for a long time this year, limiting farmers’ profits. The recent increase may help improve their margins.

Currently, vegetables are being sold at the following prices: potatoes 20–25 taka/kg, tomatoes 60 taka, bitter gourd 60–65, pointed gourd 60, bottle gourd 50–60 per piece, papaya 70, carrots 80, okra 60, snake gourd and ridge gourd 70, cucumber 100–110, yardlong beans 80, teasel gourd 120, eggplant 80–100, and sponge gourd 60–70 taka per kg.

Vendors reported that heavy rain has reduced vegetable supply, as fields in many areas are waterlogged, preventing farmers from harvesting.

At the same time, global fuel price increases have led the government to raise domestic fuel prices: diesel by 15 taka per liter, kerosene by 18, octane by 20, and petrol by 19 taka. This has further pushed up commodity prices.

Traders noted that transport costs for vegetable trucks have increased by 5,000–7,000 taka, especially from regions like Dhaka, Chattogram, and Sylhet, while rain has reduced supply in recent days—both contributing to higher prices.

Egg prices have also risen, with a dozen farm eggs selling for 120–130 taka, compared to 100–110 taka earlier. This increase is attributed to higher transport costs and some supply shortages.

Broiler chicken prices are now 190–200 taka per kg, up from 150–160 taka about a month and a half ago. Sonali chicken prices have slightly decreased to 350–360 taka per kg, though they were higher earlier.

Beef is being sold at 780–800 taka per kg, with most vendors unwilling to sell below 800 taka. Traders say prices are unlikely to fall further as the upcoming Eid-ul-Adha influences cattle pricing.

Consumers have expressed frustration over rising prices, saying it is becoming increasingly difficult for low-income people to cope.

Fish prices have also increased by 10–20 taka per kg over the week. Pangas is selling at 220–260 taka, tilapia at 230, pabda at 380, rohu at 320–360, katla at 400, tengra at 850, and shrimp at 1,000–1,250 taka per kg. Hilsa (500g size) is priced at 1,500–1,600 taka per kg.

Polao rice prices have increased by about 15 taka per kg, now reaching around 190 taka for packaged rice. Open market, it sells for 150–160 taka.

Sugar remains at 105–110 taka per kg after a recent increase, while coarse lentils have risen to 90–95 taka per kg.

Soybean oil prices were recently raised by 4 taka per liter, bringing bottled oil to 199 taka per liter and loose oil to 180 taka. However, despite the price hike, bottled soybean oil remains in short supply in the market, a situation persisting for about three months.

Traders hope that supply will improve within a few days following the price adjustment.

Fuel costs affect every stage of food production—from paddy processing to storage and transport—so rising fuel prices have also pushed up rice prices. Currently, coarse rice sells at 55–60 taka per kg, medium rice at 60–68 taka, and miniket rice at around 88 taka, all higher than a week ago.

Some traders argue that while fuel costs may justify a 2–3 taka increase per kg, actual price hikes of 5–6 taka are excessive and driven by wholesale market pressure.

Consumer rights activists have criticized the government’s decision to allow edible oil price increases, alleging that it reflects yielding to business pressure rather than protecting public interest.

They also argue that most of the edible oil currently in the market was imported months ago, so recent global price increases should not justify immediate local price hikes. Instead, they allege that supply was deliberately restricted to create artificial shortages.

According to them, ordinary consumers are effectively held hostage by dishonest business groups, while regulatory authorities fail to take effective action despite being aware of the situation.

<![CDATA[Today is the first of May—International Workers' Day, commonly known as May Day. This year’s theme is: “Healthy workers, diligent hands; a new dawn will arrive.”

On the occasion, President Mohammed Shahabuddin and Prime Minister Tarique Rahman have issued separate messages. The day will be observed through various programs.

The story dates back to 1886. Workers in Chicago, USA, began protests demanding an eight-hour workday. Armed police surrounded them. The movement was peaceful, but suddenly an unidentified man threw a bomb at the police. In response, the police launched a brutal attack on unarmed workers. When they opened fire to suppress the protest, 11 workers were killed, and many others were injured or arrested. Later, six arrested workers were executed after what was widely considered a mock trial. This sparked protests across the world. Eventually, the U.S. government was compelled to accept the workers’ demands.

In 1889, during the centenary of the French Revolution, the first congress of international labor organizations was held in Paris, France. There, Raymond Lavigne proposed observing the anniversary of the Chicago incident internationally from the following year. This proposal was officially adopted at the second congress in 1891.

However, riots occurred on May Day in 1894. Later, in 1904, at the International Socialist Conference in Amsterdam, Netherlands, a resolution was adopted urging all socialist democratic parties and trade unions to organize rallies and processions worldwide every May 1 to demand an eight-hour workday and promote peace.

Although there was concern about potential casualties, labor organizations around the world decided to observe May 1 as a “mandatory day off.” Many countries demanded it be declared a public holiday, and this was implemented in several nations.

May Day is now observed with due dignity in around 80 countries, including Bangladesh. However, in the United States and Canada, Labor Day is observed in September. The Central Labor Union and the Knights of Labor initiated that observance.

After the Haymarket incident, then U.S. President Grover Cleveland believed that May 1 observances could lead to conflict. As a result, in 1887 he supported celebrating Labor Day in September instead—a tradition that continues to this day.

The day carries both sorrow and joy. It commemorates the blood, anger, and sacrifices of workers in the United States, the benefits of which are now enjoyed by workers worldwide—and will continue to be for generations to come.

May Day is a public holiday. Workers and labor organizations across the globe observe it through rallies and processions. It serves as a source of inspiration for labor movements and also promotes harmonious relations between employers and workers. It is a day to end exploitation and deprivation.

President Mohammed Shahabuddin described May Day as “a glorious day” for establishing workers’ rights worldwide. In a message on Thursday, he expressed his delight that both May Day and National Occupational Health and Safety Day are being observed across the country. He extended heartfelt greetings and congratulations to workers in Bangladesh and around the world.

Prime Minister Tarique Rahman also extended his greetings, stating that workers are the driving force behind national development and progress. Their labor builds the foundation of industry, agriculture, infrastructure, and the economy.

He emphasized that improving workers’ living standards, ensuring fair rights, creating safe working environments, and establishing social dignity are key commitments of the government. Positive change in workers’ lives can be achieved through labor-friendly policies, increased employment, and welfare initiatives.

Various labor organizations have planned detailed programs for the occasion, including worker rallies, processions, discussions, seminars, and cultural events.

National newspapers have published special supplements marking the day. Bangladesh Television, Bangladesh Betar, and private TV channels are broadcasting special programs and talk shows.

To mark May Day, the BNP will hold a workers’ rally in front of its central office in Nayapaltan in the capital at 2 PM on Friday. Party leaders said that Prime Minister and BNP Chairperson Tarique Rahman will attend as the chief guest.

This announcement was made on Thursday at a press conference held at the BNP central office by Nazrul Islam Khan, a standing committee member and advisor to the Prime Minister. He stated that the rally is being organized to demand workers’ rights.

Labor activists hope that one day all fears and crises will be overcome. People across the country and the world wait for that moment. A new dawn will come again. Raised fists will rise high. The struggle of Labor Day will be fulfilled.

May Day is not just a day of celebration—it is a day of commitment. That commitment is the fight to end the exploitation of working people across the world.

<![CDATA[Bangladesh joined the rest of the world on Friday in observing May Day, honoring the historic struggle of workers for fair rights and better working conditions, while leaders reiterated commitments to improving labour welfare and dignity.

The historic May Day, also known as International Workers’ Solidarity Day, is being observed across Bangladesh with due importance alongside global celebrations. The day commemorates the late 19th-century labor movement in Chicago, where workers protested for an eight-hour workday.

This year’s theme, “Healthy Workers, Productive Hands, A New Dawn Awaits (Sustho Sramik, Karmotho Hat, Ashbe Ebar Nobo Provat),” highlights the importance of workers’ well-being in national progress. The day has been declared a public holiday, with newspapers publishing special supplements and electronic media broadcasting programmes focusing on its significance.

Various socio-cultural organizations and political parties have arranged events and activities marking the occasion.

May Day traces back to May 1, 1886, when workers in Chicago went on strike demanding an eight-hour workday instead of the prevailing 12-hour shifts. During protests at Haymarket, police opened fire, killing several workers. The movement eventually led to the global acceptance of the eight-hour workday.

In 1889, an international workers’ congress in Paris officially declared May 1 as International Workers’ Solidarity Day, and it has been observed worldwide since 1890.

Marking the occasion, President Mohammed Shahabuddin and Prime Minister Tarique Rahman issued separate messages emphasizing the importance of workers in national development.

The President highlighted past and ongoing initiatives aimed at ensuring workers’ rights and welfare, including labor law reforms, fair wages, social security measures and the expansion of trade union rights. He stressed that workers are the driving force behind the country’s progress and underscored the need for safe working environments and social protection.

Prime Minister Tarique Rahman described workers as the backbone of development across all sectors, including industry, agriculture and infrastructure. He reaffirmed the government’s commitment to improving living standards, ensuring fair rights and enhancing workplace safety and dignity.

Both leaders expressed hope that continued efforts would significantly improve the lives of workers and contribute to building a prosperous Bangladesh.

<![CDATA[Senior US and Iranian leaders were in the Pakistani capital Islamabad on Saturday for negotiations to end their six-week-old war, although Tehran threw the talks into doubt by saying they could not begin without commitments on Lebanon and sanctions.

The US delegation, led by Vice-President JD Vance and including President Donald Trump's special envoy Steve Witkoff and son-in-law Jared Kushner, landed in two US air force planes at an air base in Islamabad on Saturday morning, where they were received by Pakistan's army chief, Field Marshal Asim Munir, and Foreign Minister Ishaq Dar.

The Iranian delegation, led by parliamentary Speaker Mohammad Baqer Qalibaf and Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi, arrived on Friday.

These will be the highest-level US-Iran talks since the Islamic Revolution of 1979 and the first official face-to-face negotiations between the two sides since 2015, when they reached a deal on Iran's nuclear programme.

Trump scrapped the nuclear deal in 2018 during his first term in office. That year, Iran's then-Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei - who was killed at the start of the war six weeks ago - banned further direct talks between US and Iranian officials.

Iran Has ‘No Cards’, Trump Says

Qalibaf said on X that Washington had previously agreed to unblock Iranian assets and to a ceasefire in Lebanon, where Israeli attacks on Iran-backed Hezbollah militants have killed nearly 2,000 people since the start of the fighting in March. He said talks would not start until those pledges were fulfilled.

Iran's state broadcaster said the Iranian delegation would meet Pakistani Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif around noon (0700 GMT) to determine the timing and manner of "possible negotiations".

Israel and the US have said the Lebanon campaign is not part of the Iran-US ceasefire, while Tehran insists it is.

Qalibaf said separately that Iran was ready to reach a deal if Washington offered what he described as a genuine agreement and granted Iran its rights, Iranian state media reported.

The White House did not immediately comment on the Iranian demands, but Trump posted on social media that the only reason the Iranians were alive was to negotiate a deal.

"The Iranians don't seem to realize they have no cards, other than a short term extortion of the World by using International Waterways. The only reason they are alive today is to negotiate!" he said.

Vance, speaking as he headed to Pakistan, said he expected a positive outcome but added: "If they're going to try to play us, then they're going to find the negotiating team is not that receptive."

Preliminary discussions have been separately held by Pakistani officials with advance teams from both sides, sources in Islamabad said.

Iran's semi-official Tasnim News Agency said these included 70 members from Tehran, including technical specialists in economic, security and political fields as well as media personnel and support staff. About 100 members of an advance US team were in the city, a Pakistani government source said.

"We're very positive," said another Pakistani source close to the discussions.

Asked if talks would end on Saturday, the source said: "Too early to say. They have instructions to close a deal or walk away. Hence not in a rush. These talks are not on the clock."

Islamabad was under an unprecedented lockdown ahead of the talks with thousands of paramilitary personnel and army troops on the streets.

"We have deployed multi-layer security for this event, which is based on coordination, intelligence and constant monitoring for zero disruption and full control," Pakistan's junior interior minister, Talal Chaudhry, told Reuters.

Trump announced a two-week ceasefire in the war on Tuesday, which has halted US and Israeli airstrikes on Iran.

But it has not ended Iran's blockade of the Strait of Hormuz, which has caused the biggest-ever disruption to global energy supplies, or calmed the parallel war between Israel and Iran-backed Hezbollah in Lebanon.

Fighting Continues in Lebanon

Israeli and Lebanese officials will hold talks in Washington on Tuesday, both sides said, amid conflicting accounts on what those talks would cover.

Lebanon's presidency said officials from the two countries had held a phone call on Friday and agreed to discuss announcing a ceasefire and setting a start date for bilateral talks under US mediation. But Israel's embassy in Washington said the talks would constitute the start of "formal peace negotiations" and that Israel had refused to discuss a ceasefire with Hezbollah.

Tehran's agenda at the Islamabad talks also includes demands for major new concessions, including the end of sanctions that crippled its economy for years, and acknowledgment of its authority over the Strait of Hormuz, where it aims to collect transit fees and control access in what would amount to a huge shift in regional power.

Iran's ships were sailing through the strait unimpeded on Friday, while those of other countries remained hemmed inside.

Disruption to energy supplies has fed inflation and slowed the global economy, with an impact expected to last for months even if negotiators succeed in reopening the strait.

The hard line taken by Iran's leaders ahead of the negotiations followed a defiant message from its new Supreme Leader Ayatollah Mojtaba Khamenei on Thursday.

Khamenei, yet to be seen in public and said to be suffering from severe facial and leg injuries sustained in the attack that killed his father, said Iran would demand compensation for all wartime damage. "We will certainly not leave unpunished the criminal aggressors who attacked our country," he said.

Although Trump has declared victory and degraded Iran's military capabilities, the war has not achieved many of the aims he set out at the start: to deprive Iran of the ability to strike its neighbours, dismantle its nuclear programme, and make it easier for its people to overthrow their government.

Iran still possesses missiles and drones capable of hitting its neighbours and a stockpile of more than 400 kg (900 pounds) of uranium enriched near the level needed to make a bomb. Its clerical rulers, who faced a popular uprising just months ago, withstood the war with no sign of organised opposition.
