<![CDATA[Speaker Major (Retd.) Hafiz Uddin Ahmed, Bir Bikram, admonished opposition MP Hasnat Abdullah on Friday, telling him to exercise patience and restraint after the lawmaker became visibly agitated during a heated parliamentary debate over amendments to the July Mass Uprising Memorial Museum Bill.

"You cannot be this impatient, Mr. Abdullah. This is not Shahbag intersection, this is Parliament. You must wait patiently here and listen," the Speaker said, directing his remarks at the Cumilla-4 MP during the thirteenth day of the first session of the thirteenth parliament.

The exchange occurred after the passage of the July Mass Uprising Memorial Museum Bill 2026 with three ruling party amendments that increased government control over the institution, a move that triggered strong objections from the opposition. As tensions escalated in the chamber, the Speaker intervened to restore order.

Addressing Hasnat Abdullah directly, the Speaker explained that parliamentary procedure allows limited scope for verbal interventions. "You will submit notices, and we will adjudicate on those notices. The point the Law Minister has made can be reconsidered. You can discuss among yourselves and bring an amendment bill in the next session, which the ruling party will certainly consider," he said.

Despite the tension, the Speaker took the opportunity to commend the overall conduct of the current parliament, drawing comparisons with previous assemblies he had witnessed. "I have seen the previous six parliaments. No previous parliament had as beautiful and cooperative an environment as this one. The remarkable understanding shown by both the government and opposition in passing 90 bills is rare in parliamentary history," he said, noting that past parliaments were marked by extremely sharp and even obscene exchanges between the two sides.

The Speaker highlighted the strength of the current opposition, calling the presence of 77 to 78 opposition members a significant achievement for democracy. "We all came here through a fair election. After the July uprising, this parliament has had a wonderful beginning. We want to move forward with the spirit of cooperation," he said.

Striking a conciliatory tone, the Speaker affirmed that disagreement is the beauty of democracy. "If there were no differences of opinion, the country would have only one party," he observed, pledging to ensure the opposition receives its rightful space in parliamentary proceedings.

"As Speaker, I assure you that I will make every effort to ensure the opposition gets the rights it deserves," he said.

<![CDATA[Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami on Thursday alleged large-scale irregularities in the Bogura-6 and Sherpur-3 by-elections, claiming that the fairness of the polls was compromised by vote rigging, ballot stuffing and forced expulsion of polling agents.

Speaking at a press briefing held at the party’s central office, Jamaat Secretary General Mia Golam Parwar expressed grave concern over the conduct of the elections, demanding immediate intervention from the Election Commission.

"We have received alarming reports from both constituencies. Our polling agents were not allowed to enter many centres and in several instances, they were forcibly removed to facilitate fake voting," Parwar alleged.

Referring to the situation in Bogura, Parwar claimed that presiding officers in several centres violated electoral rules by forcing polling agents to sign result sheets as early as the morning.

“The law dictates that result sheets are to be signed after the counting process ends. However, at centres like Maltinagar Government Primary School, signatures were taken in advance, clearing way for irregularities,” he said.

Regarding Sherpur-3, Parwar alleged that by noon, agents had been driven out of at least 13 polling stations. He cited an incident at Islamia Kamil Madrasa in Sreebordi municipality, where he claimed local political activists entered the centre, expelled Jamaat agents and assaulted a party youth leader.

He further noted that the pre-election atmosphere in Sherpur was marred by the death of Rezaul Karim, Sreebordi upazila unit secretary, who was allegedly beaten to death, adding to the local tensions.

Jamaat leader criticised the role of law enforcement and election officials, stating that despite filing over 20 written complaints, no effective action was taken to curb the intimidation of voters, particularly women.

“We are bringing these serious violations to the attention of the Chief Election Commissioner. We demand legal action against those responsible and call for re-polling in the centres where major irregularities occurred,” Parwar added, warning that the credibility of the entire process is at stake.

The by-elections were held on Thursday following the vacation of the Bogura-6 seat by BNP Chairman Tarique Rahman, who chose to retain the Dhaka-17 constituency and the death of the original Jamaat candidate for Sherpur-3, Nuruzzaman Badal.

<![CDATA[BNP Senior Joint Secretary General Ruhul Kabir Rizvi has said that Jamaat-e-Islami could not have participated in politics in independent Bangladesh without the late President Ziaur Rahman and that the party would not have had the chance to serve as ministers without former Prime Minister Khaleda Zia.

“If Shaheed Ziaur Rahman had not been there, Jamaat would not have had the opportunity to do politics in this country. And if Khaleda Zia were not there, you would never have tasted ministership,” he said.

He made the remarks while speaking at a public rally held at the central Eidgah ground in Kurigram on Monday.

Rizvi also addressed Jamaat leaders and criticised their stance on women’s role in politics. He added that Jamaat leaders now claim women can become lawmakers and participate in politics but cannot rise to the top leadership positions. “They say women cannot become party chiefs or heads of state,” he said.

Questioning the logic behind such claims, Rizvi said, “Is this a matter of protecting women’s rights? Why can’t a woman become the head of a party? The party with which you aligned and tasted ministership is BNP. Its chairperson was a woman. The mindset you hide inside cannot be imagined.”

He further alleged that Jamaat would deprive women of power if it came to power, saying, “If they come to power, women will not have authority. They will not be able to hold good positions in workplaces or politics. Their statements prove this.”

The BNP leader also spoke about alleged persecution of the BNP and its leader, claiming that Khaleda Zia was mistreated in prison, denied proper medical treatment, and poisoned through her food.

He urged voters to support the BNP’s election symbol, the ‘Sheaf of paddy’, stating that a victory would serve as a protest against the injustices of deposed prime minister Sheikh Hasina.

“If we can secure a BNP victory, it will send a strong message against Sheikh Hasina’s oppression. This election carries immense significance, and we must achieve this by voting for the Sheaf of Paddy,” he said.

Kurigram-2 BNP candidate Sohel Hossain Kaykobad also spoke at the rally, pledging his dedication to serving the people if elected.

The rally was attended by district BNP convener Mostafizur Rahman, senior joint convener Shafiqul Islam Babu, Hasibur Rahman Hasib, and other party leaders.

Speaking at a roadside rally at Engineering Construction Battalion (ECB) intersection in Mirpur under Dhaka-17 constituency at around 3:45 PM, Tarique said BNP aims to make Dhaka a secure city where people can move freely without fear.

“InshaAllah, if we are elected with the support of people, we will turn cities across the country, including Dhaka, into safe cities,” he said, marking the first day of his final election campaign in the capital.

He said Dhaka would be developed into a city where women can walk safely at any time, people can live and work without insecurity and residents can enjoy a clean and healthy environment. “We want to build a beautiful Dhaka where people can breathe freely,” he added.

Highlighting the lack of playgrounds in the area, the BNP chief said he had learned that the locality has insufficient open spaces for recreation.

“If BNP forms the government on February 12, we will not only build playgrounds here but construct at least 40 playgrounds across Dhaka,” he said.

He said the playgrounds would provide open spaces for children to play and allow elderly people and women to walk and spend time outdoors.

Calling for votes in favour of BNP’s election symbol; Dhaner Shish, Tarique said the upcoming election is crucial for rebuilding the nation.

Introducing himself to voters, he said he is a resident and son of Dhaka-17 constituency. “I grew up here. My children and my brother’s children were born here and our family life is deeply connected to this area,” he said.

As a local candidate, he urged elders, women and young voters to support him in February 12 election by voting for Dhaner Shish.

After the rally, he left for another campaign meeting at Adarsha High School at Senpara of Mirpur-10 area.

The order was passed by the Appellate Division led by the Chief Justice Zubayer Rahman Chowdhury on Tuesday following a petition filed by Jamuna Bank.

Earlier on February 1, the hearing concluded on the bank’s appeal challenging the Election Commission’s decision to declare Aslam Chowdhury’s nomination valid despite allegations that he is a loan defaulter.

In the case of the Chattogram-2 constituency, the High Court had stayed the cancellation of BNP-nominated candidate Sarwar Alamgir's nomination and directed that he be allowed to participate in the election.

Sarwar's nomination was cancelled by the Election Commission on January 18 following an appeal hearing.

<![CDATA[Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) Chairman Tarique Rahman launched a fierce critique against Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami on Monday, accusing the party of harboring plans to confine women to their homes and marginalize them from national leadership.

Speaking as the chief guest at an electoral rally in Khulna’s Khalishpur, Tarique asserted that no nation can progress while excluding half of its population, specifically referencing the nearly 100 million women who form the backbone of the country.

The BNP leader pointedly criticized recent derogatory comments made by a rival leader concerning working women, describing such rhetoric as a disgrace to the entire nation.

He reminded the audience that Prophet Muhammad’s (PBUH) wife, Hazrat Khadija (RA), was a successful entrepreneur, arguing that those claiming to represent Islamic values have no right to disparage women's professional lives.

He also dismissed the rival party’s claims that their social media accounts were hacked to post offensive content, labeling the excuse a blatant falsehood ahead of the February 12 polls.

Highlighting his party’s vision for reconstruction, Tarique pledged to govern through inclusion, involving all classes and professions.

He recalled the initiatives of former Prime Minister Khaleda Zia, such as free education for girls up to the intermediate level, as the foundation for female empowerment in Bangladesh.

He emphasized that the millions of women working in the garment industry and those supporting their families through rising inflation are essential to the national economy and deserve dignity rather than insults.

Beyond social issues, the BNP Chairman outlined a series of economic pledges designed to provide immediate relief and long-term stability.

He announced the introduction of a "Family Card" system to foster financial independence for women and a "Krishi Card" for farmers to access essential supplies. Tarique also made a high-stakes promise to waive interest and principal on agricultural loans up to Tk 10,000.

For the youth, he committed to developing modern IT parks and revitalizing the industrial sectors of Khulna, Satkhira, and Bagerhat to restore the region’s status as a vibrant economic hub.

Addressing the broader political landscape, Tarique characterized the upcoming election as a historic opportunity for citizens to reclaim a right denied to them for 16 years.

He noted that after the mass uprising in July and August 2024, the people are finally in a position to express their will through the ballot.

He concluded by stating that only through quality education, modern healthcare, and widespread employment can the expected "New Bangladesh" be built.

He assured that if the BNP forms the government, initiatives will be taken to solve seven major problems in Dhaka's Uttara area, including gas and water shortages, healthcare services, waterlogging, and traffic congestion.

He made these remarks while addressing at an election rally held at the Azampur Eidgah ground at Uttara late night on Tuesday.

Tarique arrived at the rally venue at 12:52AM after traveling from Mymensingh via Gazipur and delivered a brief speech.

At the beginning of his address, he apologised for arriving late, explaining that he was delayed due to exchanging greetings with people in various areas along the way.

Highlighting the problems in Uttara, the BNP chief said that despite paying bills regularly, residents are suffering from gas and water shortages. According to him, this crisis is not limited to Uttara alone, but exists across the country. He noted that the situation has become more complicated due to the prolonged halt in the exploration of new gas wells. He emphasized that resolving this crisis is essential for establishing new industries and creating employment opportunities.

''Over the past 16 to 17 years, people’s democratic rights had been taken away. Through the extraordinary sacrifices of the people of Uttara on August 5, a path has been created to reclaim those rights. Now is the time to rebuild the country.''

After his surrender, prosecutor Gazi MH Tamim confirmed the matter to media.

It is learned that, last year, Abul Kalam appealed to the Ministry of Home Affairs seeking suspension of his sentence. He made the application under Section 401 of the Code of Criminal Procedure.

On January 21, 2013, Justice Obaidul Hassan, Chairman of International Crimes Tribunal-2, delivered the verdict sentencing him to death.

Allegation of killing at least 14 persons, rape, kidnap, arson attack, looting have been brought against Azad and those were proved.

Out of eight charges, seven have been proved against Azad. Although there was scope to award the death penalty on three charges and imprisonment on four others, the tribunal did not pass sentences on those charges because the death penalty had already been imposed. Another charge was dismissed as the prosecution failed to prove it.

<![CDATA[Inqilab Moncho on Saturday issued a 24-hour ultimatum demanding the resignation of Home Affairs Adviser, centering its protest on the killing of the organisation’s spokesperson, Shaheed Sharif Osman Hadi.

The announcement was made in the afternoon at Shahbagh, where activists and supporters gathered following Hadi’s burial.

Alongside the ultimatum, the platform demanded a fair investigation into the killing and the immediate arrest of those responsible, warning of tougher programmes involving students and the public if their demands are not met.

Speakers at the rally said the death of Sharif Osman Hadi was not an isolated incident but a clear reflection of the grave failure of law and order in the country.

They gave the Home Affairs Adviser, Lieutenant General (Retd) Md Jahangir Alam Chowdhury, 24 hours to step down, announcing that failure to do so within the stipulated time would lead to more stringent protests with mass participation.

Earlier in the afternoon, at around 3:30 PM, Sharif Osman Hadi was laid to rest beside the mausoleum of National Poet Kazi Nazrul Islam near Dhaka University Central Mosque.

Present at the burial were Jatiya Nagorik Party (NCP) Chief Organiser (Southern Region) Hasnat Abdullah, Dhaka University Vice-Chancellor Professor Dr Niaz Ahmed Khan, Amar Desh editor Mahmudur Rahman, leaders from DUCSU, as well as Hadi’s family members and relatives.

Hadi’s namaz-e-janaza was held at 2:30 PM at South Plaza of Jatiya Sangsad Bhaban, where his elder brother, Abu Bakar Siddique, led the janaza in presence of a massive gathering of mourners.
