<![CDATA[Finance Minister Amir Khosru Mahmud Chowdhury on Friday said the government is focusing on economic democratisation and deregulation to ensure that the benefits of national growth reach every citizen across the country.

He also said that the government is fully equipped with a robust strategy to navigate emerging global and domestic challenges, prioritising a transparent and inclusive economic framework over mere GDP growth.

Delivering a comprehensive statement in Parliament with Speaker Hafiz Uddin Ahmad, Bir Bikram, in the chair, the minister highlighted that the government, backed by a strong public mandate, has initiated sweeping reforms to stabilise the economy and restore institutional strength.

Minister informed the House that the ongoing conflict involving the US, Israel and Iran has triggered fresh global uncertainties, causing fuel oil and LNG prices to more than double in international markets.

Despite the soaring costs, Khosru emphasised that the government has opted to shield citizens by maintaining existing energy prices. This decision, however, will require an additional subsidy of approximately Taka 36,000 crore in the current fiscal year, necessitating nearly USD 3 billion for additional import payments and exerting significant pressure on foreign exchange reserves.

Outlining a bold vision to transform Bangladesh into a trillion-dollar economy by 2034, the finance minister noted that the government is focused on economic democratisation and deregulation to ensure that the benefits of growth reach every citizen.

As part of this roadmap, the government has undertaken a plan to create one crore jobs through ICT expansion, modernising infrastructure, and developing the blue economy.

Additionally, administration has begun distributing 50 lakh family cards and has waived agricultural loans up to Tk 10,000 to support rural producers.

On the fiscal front, Khosru stated that the government is prioritising revenue transparency and automation to raise tax-GDP ratio to 10% in the medium term and 15% by 2034.

He also detailed steps taken to restore discipline in the banking sector, including strengthening the central bank's legal framework and addressing capital shortages.

Highlighting the "Made in Bangladesh" brand initiative, he expressed confidence that the strategic planning led by Prime Minister Tarique Rahman would fulfill public expectations.

Minister concluded by announcing that work has already commenced on the national budget for the 2026-27 fiscal year, with a primary focus on restoring sector-wide discipline.

"Due to the supply chain crisis, not only fuel but other commodities will also increase in Bangladesh," Amir Khosru told reporters after a National Multi-Stakeholder Consultation Workshop on LDC graduation preparedness at the Planning Ministry in Sher-e-Bangla Nagar.

He said, noting that this is not a problem affecting only Bangladesh but a global challenge.

''The ongoing energy crisis is already casting an adverse shadow over the national economy. The prices of food items will go up as a consequence of this crisis."

Minister Amir Khosru also acknowledged the growing fiscal pressure on the government, pointing out that while other countries have significantly raised fuel prices, Bangladesh has refrained from doing so - a decision, which is straining state funds.

"How long we can keep fuel prices unchanged is difficult to say with certainty. We are purchasing fuel using state treasury funds, which will ultimately be a loss for the people," the minister said, adding that any decision on fuel pricing will be taken with public welfare as the foremost consideration.

<![CDATA[The Prime Minister (PM) Tarique Rahman has said the legacy of the 1971 Liberation War must not be diminished under the guise of discussion, criticism or research, stressing the need to uphold historical truth and national values.
Speaking as the chief guest at a BNP-organized discussion marking Independence and National Day at Engineers Institution in Dhaka, Tarique said the nation must not forget its past but cautioned that excessive preoccupation with history has at times hindered progress toward the future.

The prime minister described Ziaur Rahman as an inevitable character of the 1971 Liberation War, noting that although he was a military officer rather than a political activist, his writings reveal a deep and long-held aspiration for a sovereign Bangladesh.

Tarique cited Ziaur Rahman's essay titled The Birth of a Nation, first published in Dainik Bangla newspaper on March 26, 1972, marking the country's first Independence Day.

He quoted from its final paragraph, in which Ziaur Rahman wrote about the historic moment at 2:15 am on March 26, 1971, describing it as a day written in blood on the hearts of Bengalis that the people of Bangladesh would remember and cherish forever.

The PM emphasized the historical significance of the essay, noting that it was published shortly after the war ended when all surviving freedom fighters and key participants were still alive, yet no one raised any objection or contradiction to its contents.

He added that the essay was republished in 1974 in the weekly magazine Bichitra, again without any dispute from the then government or any political figure.

Tarique argued that these facts demonstrate that attempts to diminish Ziaur Rahman's role in the Liberation War are baseless. He called the essay a unique and invaluable document of the independence movement.

Drawing parallels with global freedom struggles, the prime minister said only those who have fought for independence can truly understand its value, referencing the ongoing struggle of the Palestinian people.

He paid tribute to the hundreds of thousands who sacrificed their lives in 1971 and acknowledged those who he said defended democracy and sovereignty during political upheaval in 2024.

Tarique said the aspirations of all martyrs from 1971 to the present have been rooted in equality, human dignity and social justice, with the ultimate goal of establishing an independent, sovereign, safe and democratic Bangladesh free from subservience.

Highlighting the government's development agenda, the prime minister said the elected government has launched several programs targeting people across all sectors, including family cards, farmer cards, canal excavation, tree plantation drives and employment generation initiatives.

He said the government is working tirelessly to improve living standards across the country.

Concluding his address, Tarique called on citizens to pledge unity and coexistence on Independence Day.

He urged people of all classes and professions to work together toward building a self-reliant Bangladesh, embracing good values and rejecting negativity as the nation's collective commitment on this historic occasion.

<![CDATA[BNP Standing Committee member Mirza Abbas is showing gradual improvement while undergoing treatment at Singapore General Hospital, according to Social Welfare Minister Prof Dr AZM Zahid Hossain.

Speaking on Monday, Zahid said physicians attending Abbas have observed encouraging clinical indicators. “I spoke with the doctors and they confirmed that several parameters are improving. His condition is getting better,” he said, noting that recovery may be slow due to the nature of his brain-related condition.

Abbas, who also serves as Political Adviser to the Prime Minister, was flown to Singapore by air ambulance on March 15 after undergoing neurosurgery in Dhaka.

Hospital sources and family members indicated cautious optimism. His personal assistant, Mizanur Rahman Sohel, said doctors assisted Abbas in sitting up on a chair on Monday morning-an encouraging development in his recovery process. He added that Abbas has begun to speak gradually and remains under close medical supervision.

Family members, including his wife Afroza Abbas and son Yasir Abbas, are currently in Singapore attending to him. They have requested prayers for his recovery.

Earlier, Abbas was admitted to Evercare Hospital in Dhaka on March 11 after falling ill and losing consciousness during iftar. A medical board subsequently recommended surgery, which was performed on March 13 and lasted nearly four hours. He remained in intensive care for two days before being transferred abroad for advanced treatment.

Doctors have not yet indicated a timeline for full recovery but say his condition is stable and improving.

<![CDATA[BNP has announced a two day programme to observe the Great Independence and National Day on March 26, the party's Senior Joint Secretary General Ruhul Kabir Rizvi said on Sunday.

Speaking at a press conference at the party's Nayapaltan central office, Rizvi outlined the planned activities. The party will hoist national and party flags at all its offices, including the central office, in the morning.

On the day, the president and prime minister will place wreaths at the National Memorial in Savar to pay tribute to the martyrs of the Liberation War. BNP leaders and activists will also pay homage there on behalf of the party.

From the National Memorial, party leaders and activists will proceed to Sher e Bangla Nagar to place wreaths at the graves of the party's founder and former President Ziaur Rahman and former Prime Minister Begum Khaleda Zia. A doa mahfil will be held at the grave premises, organised by the Jatiyatabadi Olama Dal.

On March 25, BNP will hold a discussion meeting at 2:30pm at the Institution of Engineers, Bangladesh.

Rizvi, who is also the prime minister's adviser on industry, said Independence and National Day is a major milestone in the nation's history, as independence gave Bangladesh a distinct identity on the world map and within the international community.

He said the day is highly significant as independence was achieved through long struggle and sacrifice, culminating on March 26. Rizvi noted that then Major Ziaur Rahman's declaration of independence inspired people from all walks of life, including students, workers, farmers and ordinary citizens, to join the Liberation War.

He said BNP has taken elaborate programmes to observe the day with respect for the sacrifices made during the Liberation War. The party has already published a poster marking Independence Day and will issue special supplements in national dailies.

In addition to the central two day programme, Rizvi said BNP units at district and municipal levels will organise discussion meetings and other events, while associate and affiliated bodies will implement their own programmes.

He called on leaders and activists of BNP and its associate organisations to make the programmes a success.

He paid tribute to those who lost their lives in the movements of 1947, 1952 and 1971, as well as individuals who were killed, imprisoned or persecuted during what he described as years of authoritarian rule.

Recalling participants of the July mass uprising, he said their sacrifices made the formation of the current Parliament possible.

“This Parliament is not an ordinary one; it stands upon the blood of July,” he said, offering prayers for those who died and wishing a speedy recovery to those who were injured.

Congratulating the Speaker and Deputy Speaker, he noted that Bangladesh had completed 55 years of independence, but parliamentary democracy had functioned effectively only for limited periods.

“Most of the time Parliament became ineffective under the grip of fascism,” he said, adding that many past office-holders had failed to ensure justice for Parliament, the country and its people.

Expressing confidence in the new leadership, Shafiqur Rahman said he hoped the Speaker would treat both treasury and opposition benches equally and allow all members to speak for the welfare of the nation.

He also urged the Speaker to ensure that Parliament does not become a platform for character assassination, but rather a forum for meaningful debate focused on public welfare.

Shafiqur Rahman further expressed hope that the presence of many young lawmakers would make the House more vibrant and productive, with new members learning from experienced parliamentarians.

<![CDATA[President Mohammed Shahabuddin and Prime Minister (PM) Tarique Rahman paid solemn tributes to the Language Movement martyrs at the Central Shaheed Minar in the first minutes of International Mother Language Day and Martyrs Day.

At 12:01 am on Friday, the head of state and head of government laid wreaths at the memorial in Dhaka, honoring those who sacrificed their lives on February 21, 1952, to protect the status of Bangla as a state language.

The president placed the first wreath shortly after midnight, followed by the prime minister. Both leaders stood in silence for several moments in remembrance of the fallen heroes.

After the wreath-laying ceremony, the prime minister joined thousands of attendees in a special prayer seeking peace for the souls of the martyrs. He later paid tribute again alongside members of his cabinet and advisers. Senior leaders of the Bangladesh Nationalist Party also placed wreaths at the Shaheed Minar.

February 21 marks the 74th anniversary of the historic Language Movement, when students protesting for Bangla to be recognized as a state language of then Pakistan were met with police gunfire. Several protesters, including Salam, Barkat, Rafiq, Shafiur and Jabbar, were killed. Their sacrifice is widely regarded as a defining moment in Bangladesh’s struggle for cultural and political rights.

In recognition of the movement’s significance, UNESCO in 2010 declared February 21 as International Mother Language Day, now observed worldwide to promote linguistic and cultural diversity.

The day’s nationwide program began at 12:01 am with the offering of wreaths at the Central Shaheed Minar. Political, social and cultural organizations have organized processions, discussions and commemorative events across the country. Participants are wearing black badges as a symbol of mourning.

For Bangladeshis, the day is one of both grief and pride, commemorating a rare instance in history when people gave their lives for their mother tongue. The nation renews its pledge each year to uphold the dignity of the Bangla language.

February 21 is observed as a public holiday. The national flag is being flown at half-mast at all government, semi-government, autonomous and private institutions, alongside black flags. President Shahabuddin and Prime Minister Rahman issued separate messages marking the occasion.

Opposition leader in parliament and Jamaat-e-Islami Ameer Dr Shafiqur Rahman paid tribute to the Language Movement martyrs at the Central Shaheed Minar in early hours of Saturday on the Martyrs Day and International Mother Language Day.

At 12:22 am, Dr Rahman placed a wreath at the altar of the Shaheed Minar, honoring those who were killed on February 21, 1952, while demanding recognition of Bangla as a state language.

He was accompanied by Opposition Whip and Jatiya Nagorik Party (NCP) Convener Nahid Islam, NCP Member Secretary Akhtar Hossain, and other senior leaders of the 11-party Jamaat-led alliance.

According to Jamaat sources, after paying homage at the Central Shaheed Minar, Dr Rahman is scheduled to visit the graves of the Language Movement martyrs at Azimpur Graveyard to offer prayers seeking peace for their souls.

<![CDATA[The Election Commission (EC) has abruptly reversed its decision to prohibit the use of mobile phones within a 400-yard radius of polling stations during the upcoming 13th National Parliamentary Election and Referendum.

EC Senior Secretary Akhtar Ahmed confirmed the significant policy shift while speaking to the press on Monday afternoon (February 9).

He stated that the restriction has been lifted and a formal gazette notification reflecting this change would be issued "within moments."

The reversal comes just 24 hours after the Commission had issued a strict directive on Sunday (February 8), aimed at tightening security.

In a letter signed by Senior Assistant Secretary Md. Shahidul Islam and distributed to Returning Officers nationwide, the EC had initially ordered a near-total ban on mobile devices in the vicinity of voting centers.

Under the previous directive—which has now been effectively nullified—only the Presiding Officer, the Police In-charge, and two designated Ansar or VDP members utilizing the 'Nirbachon Surakkha 2026' app were permitted to carry phones inside the centers.
