<![CDATA[Senior US and Iranian leaders were in the Pakistani capital Islamabad on Saturday for negotiations to end their six-week-old war, although Tehran threw the talks into doubt by saying they could not begin without commitments on Lebanon and sanctions.

The US delegation, led by Vice-President JD Vance and including President Donald Trump's special envoy Steve Witkoff and son-in-law Jared Kushner, landed in two US air force planes at an air base in Islamabad on Saturday morning, where they were received by Pakistan's army chief, Field Marshal Asim Munir, and Foreign Minister Ishaq Dar.

The Iranian delegation, led by parliamentary Speaker Mohammad Baqer Qalibaf and Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi, arrived on Friday.

These will be the highest-level US-Iran talks since the Islamic Revolution of 1979 and the first official face-to-face negotiations between the two sides since 2015, when they reached a deal on Iran's nuclear programme.

Trump scrapped the nuclear deal in 2018 during his first term in office. That year, Iran's then-Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei - who was killed at the start of the war six weeks ago - banned further direct talks between US and Iranian officials.

Iran Has ‘No Cards’, Trump Says

Qalibaf said on X that Washington had previously agreed to unblock Iranian assets and to a ceasefire in Lebanon, where Israeli attacks on Iran-backed Hezbollah militants have killed nearly 2,000 people since the start of the fighting in March. He said talks would not start until those pledges were fulfilled.

Iran's state broadcaster said the Iranian delegation would meet Pakistani Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif around noon (0700 GMT) to determine the timing and manner of "possible negotiations".

Israel and the US have said the Lebanon campaign is not part of the Iran-US ceasefire, while Tehran insists it is.

Qalibaf said separately that Iran was ready to reach a deal if Washington offered what he described as a genuine agreement and granted Iran its rights, Iranian state media reported.

The White House did not immediately comment on the Iranian demands, but Trump posted on social media that the only reason the Iranians were alive was to negotiate a deal.

"The Iranians don't seem to realize they have no cards, other than a short term extortion of the World by using International Waterways. The only reason they are alive today is to negotiate!" he said.

Vance, speaking as he headed to Pakistan, said he expected a positive outcome but added: "If they're going to try to play us, then they're going to find the negotiating team is not that receptive."

Preliminary discussions have been separately held by Pakistani officials with advance teams from both sides, sources in Islamabad said.

Iran's semi-official Tasnim News Agency said these included 70 members from Tehran, including technical specialists in economic, security and political fields as well as media personnel and support staff. About 100 members of an advance US team were in the city, a Pakistani government source said.

"We're very positive," said another Pakistani source close to the discussions.

Asked if talks would end on Saturday, the source said: "Too early to say. They have instructions to close a deal or walk away. Hence not in a rush. These talks are not on the clock."

Islamabad was under an unprecedented lockdown ahead of the talks with thousands of paramilitary personnel and army troops on the streets.

"We have deployed multi-layer security for this event, which is based on coordination, intelligence and constant monitoring for zero disruption and full control," Pakistan's junior interior minister, Talal Chaudhry, told Reuters.

Trump announced a two-week ceasefire in the war on Tuesday, which has halted US and Israeli airstrikes on Iran.

But it has not ended Iran's blockade of the Strait of Hormuz, which has caused the biggest-ever disruption to global energy supplies, or calmed the parallel war between Israel and Iran-backed Hezbollah in Lebanon.

Fighting Continues in Lebanon

Israeli and Lebanese officials will hold talks in Washington on Tuesday, both sides said, amid conflicting accounts on what those talks would cover.

Lebanon's presidency said officials from the two countries had held a phone call on Friday and agreed to discuss announcing a ceasefire and setting a start date for bilateral talks under US mediation. But Israel's embassy in Washington said the talks would constitute the start of "formal peace negotiations" and that Israel had refused to discuss a ceasefire with Hezbollah.

Tehran's agenda at the Islamabad talks also includes demands for major new concessions, including the end of sanctions that crippled its economy for years, and acknowledgment of its authority over the Strait of Hormuz, where it aims to collect transit fees and control access in what would amount to a huge shift in regional power.

Iran's ships were sailing through the strait unimpeded on Friday, while those of other countries remained hemmed inside.

Disruption to energy supplies has fed inflation and slowed the global economy, with an impact expected to last for months even if negotiators succeed in reopening the strait.

The hard line taken by Iran's leaders ahead of the negotiations followed a defiant message from its new Supreme Leader Ayatollah Mojtaba Khamenei on Thursday.

Khamenei, yet to be seen in public and said to be suffering from severe facial and leg injuries sustained in the attack that killed his father, said Iran would demand compensation for all wartime damage. "We will certainly not leave unpunished the criminal aggressors who attacked our country," he said.

Although Trump has declared victory and degraded Iran's military capabilities, the war has not achieved many of the aims he set out at the start: to deprive Iran of the ability to strike its neighbours, dismantle its nuclear programme, and make it easier for its people to overthrow their government.

Iran still possesses missiles and drones capable of hitting its neighbours and a stockpile of more than 400 kg (900 pounds) of uranium enriched near the level needed to make a bomb. Its clerical rulers, who faced a popular uprising just months ago, withstood the war with no sign of organised opposition.

<![CDATA[The Bangladeshi vessel, MV Banglar Joyjatra, has been denied to pass through Iran's Strait of Hormuz forcing the vessel to turn back toward Sharjah in the United Arab Emirates (UAE).

The denial made a fresh setback to efforts to bring home the ship and its 31-member crew stranded in the Persian Gulf for over 40 days.

According to Bangladesh Shipping Corporation (BSC) sources, the ship departed Saudi Arabia's Ras Al Khair port on Wednesday following a ceasefire in the Middle East conflict, heading toward the strategic strait after being stranded for approximately 40 days.

After nearly 40 hours of continuous sailing, the vessel reached the vicinity of the strait on Friday morning and formally requested passage clearance from the Iranian government. Tehran, however, rejected the request, forcing the ship to reverse course toward Sharjah port.

BSC Managing Director Commodore Mahmudul Malek confirmed that the passage request was made in accordance with Iranian guidelines but was turned down. "Diplomatic efforts to secure permission are ongoing. The ship is currently positioned near the Strait of Hormuz and has been instructed to return to Sharjah given the circumstances," he said.

Commodore Malek assured that the 31 crew members aboard have adequate food supplies. While the vessel has the capacity to purify 18 tons of seawater daily, rationing has reduced actual water consumption to six tons per day to keep the engine running efficiently. To maintain crew morale during the prolonged ordeal, the daily food allowance per sailor has been increased from seven dollars to 12 dollars, and each crew member is receiving a war allowance equivalent to their basic salary.

The ship's troubles began when it entered the Persian Gulf through the Strait of Hormuz on February 2 carrying cargo from India. After loading steel coils from Qatar, it arrived at Jebel Ali port in the UAE on February 27.

The following day, US and Israeli strikes on Iran triggered retaliatory attacks across the region, rapidly escalating into a wider conflict that trapped commercial vessels in the Gulf.

After completing cargo unloading at Jebel Ali on March 11, the BSC had planned to send the ship to a Kuwaiti port for a new consignment but instead decided to bring it home safely as hostilities intensified. An earlier attempt to navigate toward the strait was also abandoned due to security concerns before the latest failed bid following the ceasefire.

“After their disappointment to rescue the pilot of a fighter jet that was shot down by Iranian armed forces two days ago, the Americans are seeking to bomb and kill pilot in locations where he is likely to be present,” a military source told the Tasnim news agency.

The source noted that several American fighter jets bombed some areas in Kohgiluyeh city of the Kohgiluyeh and Boyer Ahmad province tonight because they thought their pilot was present in this area.

The Americans are desperate to find their second person, whom they call the flight crew, and for this reason they want to kill him by bombing several places, he added.

The source did not comment on whether the individual is currently in the hands of Iranian forces.

"We are not saying anything about this at the moment, but one thing that can be mentioned is that the Americans are not telling the whole truth, even about the first pilot, whom they claimed they saved."

According to the military source, the story of the pilots of this downed fighter jet will become another scandal for the Americans.

<![CDATA[U.S. President Donald Trump on Friday suggested that "Cuba is next" in the sequence of U.S. actions following recent military operations in Venezuela and ongoing attacks on Iran, remarks that immediately drew global attention and added to regional tensions, reports Xinhua.

Speaking at the Future Investment Initiative conference in Miami, Florida, Trump made the comment in an off the cuff manner, urging the media to "pretend I didnt say that," before repeating that "Cubas next." He did not outline specific plans for military or political action but his remarks were widely interpreted as signaling future pressure on Havana.

The comments come after U.S. forces raided Venezuela on January 3, ousting President Nicolas Maduro, and launched a series of large scale joint attacks with Israel on Iran beginning February 28. These operations have already heightened geopolitical tensions across multiple regions.

Cuba has been struggling under decades of U.S. sanctions and a severe economic and energy crisis, with the United Nations highlighting fuel shortages that have pushed parts of the country toward humanitarian stress.

Earlier this month, Trump had said that Cuba was "going to fall pretty soon," although at that time he noted that the administrations main focus remained on the conflict with Iran.

<![CDATA[Information and Broadcasting Minister Zahir Uddin Swapan has emphasised the importance of credible communication, strong democratic institutions, and a free media in ensuring stability in the evolving global order at the International Strategic Communication Summit (STRATCOM) 2026, held today in Istanbul.

Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan, Vice President Cevdet Yilmaz, and Head of Communications Burhanettin Duran delivered the opening remarks at the event.

The Information Minister thanked the Government of Turkiye for hosting the timely forum amid rising global uncertainty, marked by shifting power dynamics and growing challenges of misinformation and disinformation, while delivering his speech at the panel discussion titled “A New Framework for the Global Order: A Communication Perspective.”

He highlighted that strategic communication is now central to governance, with nations increasingly judged by the credibility and consistency of their communication.

He stressed that the most effective response to misinformation lies in strengthening institutions, particularly an independent and professional media.

“A strong fourth estate is essential to protect truth, ensure accountability, and sustain public trust,” the minister said.

Bangladesh’s ongoing reform priorities were also outlined, including strengthening democratic institutions, ensuring media freedom, reviewing restrictive laws, and developing an independent media regulatory framework.

The Information Minister reiterated that the solution to information disorder lies in a balanced, institutional approach—rejecting both censorship and unchecked chaos.

He further outlined three key principles for strategic communication: credibility, democratic resilience, and global cooperation.

The Information Minister highlighted the challenges of tackling misinformation and disinformation in a densely populated and rapidly digitizing country like Bangladesh. He noted that during the previous fascist regime, information was strategically distorted and used as a tool to control the public.

He Minister stated in his speech that in this digital age, an effective balance is needed between access to information and the free flow of information. A new, appropriate framework at both national and international levels will help us address emerging challenges. Bangladesh seeks to learn from other countries on these issues, while also contributing its own experiences to enrich global knowledge. This shared knowledge will work towards global peace and prosperity.

Highlighting bilateral ties, Bangladesh reaffirmed its close relationship with Turkiye and appreciated its support on humanitarian issues, including the Rohingya crisis.

Zahir Uddin Swapan concluded his speech with a call for a more inclusive global communication framework that ensures the voices of developing nations are fairly represented.

Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus Tahsin Ertugruloglu, Syria’s Minister of Information Hamza Almustafa, and First Vice Minister for Culture and Information of Kazakhstan Kanat Zhumabayevich Iskakov also participated in the panel discussion.

It added that shipping “to and from ports of allies and supporters of the Israeli-American enemies” is prohibited through any corridor or to any destination. Three container ships of mixed nationalities were forced to turn back after warnings.

The passage, through which one fifth of the world’s oil and gas passes, has remained largely closed since the outbreak of hostilities. It comes as Donald Trump is considering sending another 10,000 troops to the Middle East, according to a Wall Street Journal report.

The forces would likely be sent within striking distance of Iran and Kharg Island, a key oil export hub off in the Persian Gulf. Despite the escalation, Germany’s foreign minister on Friday said the US and Iran have had indirect negotiations and that representatives plan to meet shortly in Pakistan.

Trump said he would again extend the deadline for Iran to reopen the Strait of Hormuz or face the destruction of its energy plants, after Tehran had earlier rejected a 15-point US proposal to end the fighting as unfair.

Iran's response to a US peace proposal aimed at ending the war in the Middle East is expected later on Friday, according to a source briefed on the matter.

President Donald Trump and top White House officials have been told via interlocutors that Iran's counter-proposal would likely arrive later today, the source said.

America has said that negotiations have been taking place while Iran has publicly rejected the claims and insisted it will fight until “complete victory”, accusing the US of making the statements in order to ease oil prices.

G7 foreign ministers demand an end to attacks on civilians in Iran war

The foreign ministers of the G7 group of nations called on Friday for an immediate stop to attacks against civilians and civilian infrastructure in the Iran war.

In a joint statement seen by Reuters and agreed on the second day of a G7 meeting in France - this year's host country - ministers wrote: “We focused on the value of diverse partnerships, coordination, and supporting initiatives, including to mitigate global economic shocks such as disruptions to economic, energy, fertilizer and commercial supply chains, which have direct impacts on our citizens.”

The ministers also reiterated the need to restore safe and toll-free freedom of navigation in the Strait of Hormuz.

The G7 members are the United States, Britain, Canada, France, Germany, Italy and Japan, along with the European Union.

Protests erupt as Philippines declares energy emergency with only 45 days of fuel left amid Iran war
Protests have erupted across the Philippines in response to the fuel crisis sparked by Iran’s hold of the Strait of Hormuz, which has largely halted oil and gas shipments.

The country declared an energy emergency on Wednesday amid fears that fuel will run out as the Iran war rages on.

On Tuesday, the country’s energy secretary Sharon Garin said the country had about 45 days of fuel supply left.

Iran hackers claim breach of FBI director's personal accounts

Iran-linked hackers have publicly claimed the breach of FBI Director Kash Patel's personal inbox, publishing photographs of the director and his purported resume.

A Justice Department official confirmed to Reuters that Patel's emails were compromised but did not go into detail. The FBI did not immediately respond to a request for comment.

<![CDATA[Iran warned it would strike energy and water infrastructure across the Gulf if US President Donald Trump follows through on his threat to attack its electricity grid, raising fears of mass disruption in a region heavily dependent on desalination for drinking water.

Trump set a Monday deadline of around 7:45pm EDT (2345 GMT), warning late on Saturday that the United States would strike Iran’s power plants unless Tehran fully reopened the Strait of Hormuz within 48 hours.

The prospect of tit-for-tat strikes on civilian infrastructure further unsettled oil markets, with prices opening choppy in early Asia trading.

After more than three weeks of heavy US and Israeli bombardment that officials say has sharply reduced Iran’s missile capabilities, Tehran has continued to demonstrate its ability to strike back.

Air raid sirens sounded across parts of northern and central Israel, including in Tel Aviv, and the occupied West Bank overnight on Sunday, warning of incoming missiles from Iran.

Hours earlier, the Israeli military said it had completed a wave of strikes on Tehran that targeted a military base as well as weapons production and storage facilities.

At least one person was killed in an air strike on a radio station in Iran's gulf port of Bandar Abbas and Air Defenses were activated in eastern Tehran, the semi-official Mehr News agency reported early on Monday.

Trump's warning came less than a day after signalling the United States might considering winding down the conflict, even as US Marines and heavy landing craft were heading to the region.

“If Iran’s fuel and energy infrastructure is attacked by the enemy, all energy infrastructure, as well as information technology...and water desalination facilities, belonging to the US and the regime in the region will be targeted pursuant to previous warnings,” Iranian military spokesman Ebrahim Zolfaqari said, according to state media.

But while attacks on electricity could hurt Iran, they would be potentially catastrophic for its Gulf neighbours, which consume around five times as much power per capita. Electricity makes their gleaming desert cities habitable, in part by powering the desalination plants that produce 100 percent of the water consumed in Bahrain and Qatar. Such plants use seawater to meet more than 80 percent of drinking water needs in the United Arab Emirates, and 50 percent of the water supply in Saudi Arabia.

Iran's Parliament Speaker Mohammad Baqer Qalibaf doubled down, writing on X that critical infrastructure and energy facilities in the Middle East could be "irreversibly destroyed" should Iranian power plants be attacked.

Iran's powerful Revolutionary Guards said it would also mean the shipping lane where a fifth of global oil and liquefied natural gas normally transits along Iran's southern coast would remain shut.

"The Strait of Hormuz will be completely closed and will not be opened until our destroyed power plants are rebuilt," the Guards said in a statement.

More than 2,000 people have been killed during the war the US and Israel launched on Feb 28, which has upended markets, spiked fuel costs, fuelled global inflation fears and convulsed the postwar Western alliance.

‘Ticking Time Bomb of Elevated Uncertainity’

"President Trump's threat has now placed a 48-hour ticking time bomb of elevated uncertainty over markets," said IG market analyst Tony Sycamore, who expects stock markets to fall when they reopen on Monday.

Iranian attacks have effectively closed the Strait of Hormuz, causing the worst oil crisis since the 1970s. Its near-closure sent European gas prices surging as much as 35 percent last week.

"If Iran doesn't FULLY OPEN, WITHOUT THREAT, the Strait of Hormuz, within 48 HOURS from this exact point in time, the United States of America will hit and obliterate their various POWER PLANTS, STARTING WITH THE BIGGEST ONE FIRST!" Trump posted on social media around 7:45pm EDT (2345 GMT) on Saturday.

Iranian media quoted the country's representative to the International Maritime Organisation as saying the strait remains open to all shipping except vessels linked to "Iran's enemies".

Ali Mousavi said passage through the waterway was possible by coordinating security and safety arrangements with Tehran.

Ship-tracking data shows some vessels, such as Indian-flagged ships and a Pakistani oil tanker, have negotiated safe passage through the strait. But the vast majority of ships have remained holed up inside.

The United States and Israel say they have seriously degraded Iran's ability to project force beyond its borders with their three weeks of intensive air strikes. But Tehran fired its first known long-range ballistic missiles with a range of 4,000km (2,500 miles) on Friday towards a US-British Indian Ocean military base, expanding the risk of attacks beyond the Middle East.

On Sunday, Iranian strikes on two southern Israeli towns injured dozens in what an Israeli hospital described as a major casualty event. The towns were located close to Israel's secretive nuclear reactor and a number of military installations, including Nevatim Air Base, one of the country's largest.

Israel Expects ‘Weeks More of Fighting’

The war has been taking place alongside a confrontation on a separate front between Israel and Lebanon's Hezbollah, backed by Iran, with Israel saying on Sunday its troops had raided a number of the armed group's sites in southern Lebanon.

Israeli military spokesperson Brigadier General Effie Defrin told reporters Israel continues to hit Iran nonstop and expects "weeks more of fighting against Iran and Hezbollah."

Hezbollah said it had attacked several border areas in northern Israel. Israeli emergency services said one person was killed in a kibbutz near the border. Israel later said it was checking whether the death was caused by Israeli fire.

Hezbollah has fired hundreds of rockets at Israel since it entered the regional war on Mar 2, prompting an Israeli offensive that has killed more than 1,000 people in Lebanon.

Israel said it had instructed the military to accelerate the demolition of Lebanese homes in "frontline villages" to end threats to Israelis, and to destroy all bridges over Lebanon's Litani River which it said were used for "terrorist activity".

<![CDATA[At least 400 people were killed and 250 injured in an air strike by Pakistan on a drug users rehabilitation hospital in the Afghanistan capital Kabul but Pakistan rejected the claim as false and misleading and said it "precisely targeted military installations and terrorist support infrastructure" on Monday night.

Hamdullah Fitrat, the deputy spokesman for the Taliban, said the air strike took place at 9pm (1630 GMT) on Monday and targeted the Omid 2,000-bed drug rehabilitation hospital.

"Large parts of the hospital have been destroyed, and there are fears of heavy casualties," he said in a post on X. "Sadly, the number of those killed has so far reached 400, with up to 250 others injured."
Rescue teams were at the scene working to control the fire and recover the victims, he added.

Reuters could not verify the casualty numbers and the Pakistani military could not be reached for comment outside business hours.

The Pakistani Information and Broadcasting Ministry said the Afghan Taliban claim was "misreporting of facts".

In an overnight post on X, it said that Pakistan targeted military installations and "terrorist support infrastructure" including technical equipment storage and ammunition storage of the Afghan Taliban and Pakistani Taliban militants in Kabul and Nangarhar that were being used against Pakistani civilians.

"Pakistan’s targeting is precise and carefully undertaken to ensure no collateral damage is inflicted," the post said. "This misreporting of facts as drug rehabilitation facility seeks to stir sentiments, covering illegitimate support to cross-border terrorism."

Fierce fighting between the South Asian neighbours, who were close allies earlier, erupted last month with Pakistani air strikes in Afghanistan that Islamabad said targeted militant strongholds. Afghanistan called the strikes a violation of its sovereignty that targeted civilians and launched its own attacks.

Both sides have claimed to have inflicted heavy damage on the other but independent verification has not been possible.

Islamabad says Kabul provides a safe haven to militants launching attacks on Pakistan. The Taliban deny the allegation, saying tackling militancy is Pakistan's internal problem.

The conflict had ebbed amid attempts by friendly countries, including China, to mediate and end the fighting before flaring up again.

Richard Bennett, the UN Special Rapporteur for human rights in Afghanistan, said he was "dismayed" by fresh reports of Pakistani air strikes and resulting civilian deaths."My condolences. I urge parties to de-escalate, exercise maximum restraint and respect international law, including the protection of civilians and civilian objects such as hospitals," he said in a post on X.

<![CDATA[Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian outlined several conditions for ending the ongoing conflict with the United States and Israel, saying Tehran is committed to regional peace but expects its rights to be recognised, reports Xinhua. In a post on social media platform X, Pezeshkian said the conflict could only end if Iran’s “legitimate rights” are acknowledged, compensation is paid for damages and strong international guarantees are provided to prevent future attacks.

Earlier, Iran’s armed forces warned of a major retaliation if the United States carried out strikes on Iranian ports.

Abolfazl Shekarchi, spokesperson for Iran’s armed forces, told state-run IRIB TV that no port, economic centre or location in the Persian Gulf would be beyond Iran’s reach if Washington attacked Iranian port facilities.

His comments came after the US Central Command posted a warning on its Persian-language account on X urging civilians in Iran to stay away from port areas where Iranian naval operations were taking place.

The latest escalation follows joint US-Israeli attacks launched on Feb 28 targeting Tehran and several other Iranian cities. The strikes killed Iran’s then Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei, along with senior military commanders and civilians.

Iran later retaliated by launching multiple missile and drone attacks on Israeli and US-linked targets across the Middle East.

<![CDATA[The foreign minister of Iran Abbas Araghchi says military cooperation between Tehran and Moscow is ongoing and not new, describing it as part of a longstanding strategic partnership. “We have a strategic partnership with Russia,” he said. “Military cooperation between Iran and Russia is not something new. It’s not a secret. It has been in the past and it is still there, and will continue in the future.”

Asked whether Russia is helping Iran locate US targets, the minister said he did not have detailed military information but reiterated relations between the two countries are strong. “As far as I know we have a very good partnership with Russia. They are helping us in many different directions, but I don’t have any detailed information.”

US Central Command has urged civilians in Iran to stay inside their homes alleging Iranian forces are using heavily populated areas to launch drones and missiles. “This dangerous decision risks the lives of all civilians in Iran since locations used for military purposes lose protected status and could become legitimate military targets under international law,” it said in a statement.

Admiral Brad Cooper, commander of CENTCOM, added, “Iran’s terrorist regime is blatantly disregarding civilian lives by attacking Gulf partners while compromising the safety of their own people.” The statement is similar to those issued previously by Israel, which accused Hamas fighters of using civilian areas in Gaza to launch rockets.

Lebanon’s foreign minister has condemned Iranian attacks on several Arab countries and said Hezbollah’s military actions do not represent the Lebanese state. In a post on X summarising remarks made during an Arab League meeting, Foreign Minister Youssef Raji said Lebanon “strongly condemns” Iranian strikes on Gulf Arab states as well as Jordan and Iraq. Addressing Israel’s bombardment of Lebanon, he said Hezbollah has disregarded Lebanon’s national interests, accusing the group of acting independently of the state.

The United States-Israeli war on Iran could leave consumers and businesses worldwide facing weeks or months of higher fuel prices even if the conflict, which is now in its eighth day, ends quickly, as suppliers grapple with damaged facilities, disrupted logistics, and elevated risks to shipping.

Iran’s Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi says Tehran’s attacks on US targets in the Middle East are a response to the war “imposed” by the US and Israel. In an interview with NBC, the minister said Iran did not choose the conflict and is acting in self-defence. “This is not the war of our choice. This is imposed on us by the United States and by Israel,” he said, describing the conflict as “unprovoked, unwarranted and illegal”. Iran’s retaliatory military actions are directed at US bases, installations, and assets in the region, even if they are located on the territory of neighbouring countries, said Araghchi.

Iran’s foreign minister has said the selection of a new supreme leader will be decided by the country’s Assembly of Experts, stressing that it is an internal matter for the Iranian people. “A new supreme leader is going to be elected soon by the Assembly of Experts,” he said, adding that the president, cabinet and parliament were all continuing their duties.

He also pushed back against comments by US President Donald Trump, saying Iran would not allow outside interference in its domestic affairs. “This is up to the Iranian people to elect their new leader,” he said. “It is only the business of the Iranian people and nobody else’s business.”

Qatar’s Foreign Ministry has said Minister of State for Foreign Affairs Sultan bin Saad Al Muraikhi attended virtually an Arab League Council extraordinary session at the ministerial level. “The meeting discussed the Iranian attacks on the sovereignty and territorial integrity of several Arab countries, which constitute a flagrant violation of international laws and charters as well as the principles of good neighborliness,” the ministry said in a statement.
“It also addressed the serious risks these actions pose to the security and stability of Arab states and the region.”

Iran’s Foreign Ministry spokesperson Esmaeil Baghaei said the large-scale attack marked a “dangerous new phase” of the conflict and amounted to a war crime. “By targeting fuel depots, the aggressors are releasing hazardous materials and toxic substances into the air – poisoning civilians, devastating the environment, and endangering lives on a massive scale,” Baghaei wrote on X.

The UAE says it’s acting in self-defence after what it describes as a large-scale Iranian attack involving ballistic missiles and drones. In a statement, the Foreign Ministry said more than 1,400 missiles and drones were launched towards infrastructure and civilian sites, resulting in an unspecified number of casualties. The ministry described the attack as “brutal and unjustified”, saying it constituted a serious violation of international law and the UN Charter as well as an infringement on the UAE’s sovereignty and territorial integrity. The UAE said it doesn’t seek escalation or to be drawn into a wider conflict but retains the right to take “all necessary measures” to protect its sovereignty.

Hezbollah said it carried out several attacks on Israeli military sites and northern cities today, according to statements issued by the group. In one statement, the Lebanese group said it fired a rocket barrage at the Misgav base in northern Israel, which it described as a logistics facility. The group said the attack was in response to what it called Israeli strikes on dozens of Lebanese towns and cities, including Beirut’s southern suburbs. In a separate statement, Hezbollah said its fighters launched “sophisticated missiles” at the Haifa naval base. It comes after it also claimed to attack the same target yesterday. Earlier, the group said it carried out two drone attacks on the northern Israeli city of Nahariya, describing the strikes as part of a previously issued warning to the city.

The Israeli military says two of its soldiers have been killed in southern Lebanon – the first ‌fatalities among its troops since Israel-Hezbollah clashes resumed last week as Israeli intensified air strikes. The army did not immediately provide further details on the circumstances of the incident.

<![CDATA[Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, Iran's supreme leader since 1989 and sworn enemy of the West, was killed in the opening salvo of a massive US and Israeli attack that extended into a second day Sunday, as the two powers seek to topple the Islamic republic.

Iranian state television confirmed Khamenei's death early Sunday, hours after President Donald Trump announced the killing of the 86-year-old cleric he described as "one of the most evil people in History."

Cheers could be heard on Tehran's streets after reports first emerged from Israel of the death of Khamenei, as plumes of black smoke hovered over the district where he usually resides, witnesses told AFP.

The attack came weeks after Iranian authorities ruthlessly put down mass protests, killing thousands.

Loud explosions again pierced Tehran in the early hours, as Trump vowed no let-up in the strikes until the fall of the Islamic republic and urged security forces to stand down.

"This is the single greatest chance for the Iranian people to take back their Country," Trump said in a statement.

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu similarly said to Iranians, "This is your time to join forces, to overthrow the regime and to secure your future."

Iran responded to the attack with a flurry of missile and drone strikes across the Middle East, killing at least two people in Abu Dhabi and another in Tel Aviv as explosions rocked the showcase cities of Gulf Arab monarchies.

The Israeli army said that Ali Shamkhani, a top advisor to Khamenei, and the head of Iran's powerful Revolutionary Guards, General Mohammad Pakpour, were both also killed.

Along with Khamenei, Iranian media said that his daughter, son-in-law and granddaughter were killed.

One prominent survivor, Ali Larijani, head of Iran's Supreme National Security Council, vowed defiance.

"The brave soldiers and the great nation of Iran will teach an unforgettable lesson to the international oppressors," he said.

Iran state television announced a 40-day mourning period and seven public holidays following the death of supreme leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, who had been in power since 1989.

No successor has been officially appointed so far. However, a few individuals are being considered for the role.

Iran had already seen intense speculation on a successor to Khamenei, given his age. Upon his death, many observers expected greater power for the Revolutionary Guards, which are deeply entrenched in the Iranian economy.

Reza Pahlavi, the son of the late pro-Western shah deposed in the 1979 Islamic revolution, warned that any successor within the system would be illegitimate.

He called on Iranians to "stay vigilant" and then to take to the streets in massive numbers when he issues a call.

Hailing the reported demise of Khamenei, only the second supreme leader of the cleric-run state after Ayatollah Ruhollah Khomeini, Pahlavi said, "With his death, the Islamic Republic has effectively come to an end and will soon be consigned to the dustbin of history."

Pahlavi, who has spent most of his life in exile near Washington, has presented himself as a transitional figure to a secular democracy, although he does not enjoy support from all the opposition.

Iran's Red Crescent society said that at least 201 people had been killed in the strikes and more than 700 wounded.

The Iranian judiciary said one strike that hit a school in the south killed 108 people, although AFP was unable to access the site to verify the toll or the circumstances surrounding the incident.

Meanwhile in Israel, city streets stood deserted as residents took cover in shelters while the blasts of intercepted Iranian missiles reverberated overhead.

Israeli emergency services said that an Iranian missile strike killed a woman in the Tel Aviv area and that some 20 others were wounded.

Residents and AFP correspondents in the Emirati, Qatari and Bahraini capitals heard multiple rounds of explosions from Iran's retaliatory strikes.

Smoke poured from US bases in the UAE and Bahrain, home to the US Navy's Fifth Fleet.

"When we heard the sounds, we cried out of fear," said Jana Hassan, a 15-year-old student who was near the strike in Bahrain. "I will never forget the sound of those loud blasts."

In Abu Dhabi, the UAE's capital, two people were killed, while smoke and flames rose from Dubai's famed man-made island The Palm, with four reported injured.

Iran's Revolutionary Guards contacted ships to announce the closure of the Strait of Hormuz, the vital waterway for oil from the Gulf, although it was not clear if the threat was being enforced.

Tehran residents had been going about their usual business when the strikes began. Security forces quickly flooded the streets, shops pulled down their shutters and few pedestrians risked venturing out, an AFP journalist saw.

"I saw with my own eyes two Tomahawk missiles flying horizontally toward targets," a Tehran office worker told AFP before communications and internet access were cut.

It was the first US military action of this scale apparently aimed at toppling a foreign government since the 2003 invasion of Iraq.

Israel's army chief Lieutenant General Eyal Zamir said the operation was "taking place at a completely different scale" than the 12-day war it fought against Iran in June, which the US briefly joined.

An Israeli military statement said it was the largest military air raid in the history of its air force.

Trump's envoys had negotiated in Geneva on Thursday with Iran's foreign minister.
