<![CDATA[The government has issued a gazette on the Mosque Management Policy 2025, paving a way for mosque employees to include them in a structured pay scale, service benefits, recruitment rules and welfare provisions.

The policy was published in a special issue of Bangladesh Gazette on Monday. It was formulated by a committee of the Ministry of Religious Affairs which held several meetings with prominent Islamic scholars and representatives of organisations of imams and khatibs before finalisation.

Religious Affairs Adviser Dr AFM Khalid Hossain attended the meetings as the chief guest.

Under the new policy, a grade-based salary structure has been fixed for mosque employees excluding khatibs whose remuneration will be determined according to contract terms.

However, financially insolvent and mosques where 5-time prayers held have been advised to fix salaries and allowances according to their capacity. As per the new policy, senior pesh imams will receive salaries in Grade 5, pesh imams in Grade 6 and imams in Grade 9.

The chief muezzin will be paid in Grade 10, muezzin in Grade 11, chief khadem in Grade 15 and khadem in Grade 16. Mosque management committees have been asked to arrange family accommodation for staff according to their capacity and introduces a monthly savings scheme for their future welfare. A one-time honourarium will also be provided at the end of service.

Mosque employees will be entitled to a maximum of four weekly holidays per month with committee approval, 20 days of casual leave per calendar year and one earned leave for every 12 days of service, it said. For recruitment, a seven-member selection committee will be formed for each mosque and no direct appointment will be allowed without its recommendation.

Appointment letters must clearly mention salary, allowances, duties and other service conditions, it said .

The policy also creates new posts for security guards and cleaners and instructs committees to arrange separate prayer spaces for women in accordance with Shariah. The size of mosque management committees has been increased to 15 members with scope for adjustment based on mosque income, size and location.

For resolving service-related disputes, aggrieved employees may appeal within 30 days to the Upazila Nirbahi Officer or the relevant city corporation regional executive officer. A three-member committee led by the deputy commissioner will address any complexities in implementing the policy.

<![CDATA[Nezam Uddin Abir: Every morning, a bustling scene unfolds along the banks of the Karnaphuli River in the Bastuhara area of Chattogram. Across the vast open fields, hundreds of workers engage in the seasonal ritual of drying fish—a sight that, from afar, looks like a golden carpet shimmering under the sun. This is where Chattogram’s famous dried fish, or shutki, is produced—supplying not only local markets but also destinations across Bangladesh and even abroad.

Before sunrise, workers gather by the riverbank. Some clean freshly caught fish, others mix them with salt and spread them out on bamboo mats to dry. Once dried, the fish are sorted and packed into baskets for sale. The air is thick with the scent of fish and salt—a smell that, for thousands, signifies livelihood.

Local trader Md. Rafiqul Islam, who has been in the dried fish business for over 15 years, explained,

“We mainly dry fish caught from the Karnaphuli River and the Bay of Bengal. The drying season runs from October to March, when the weather is sunny and dry—perfect for quick drying.” He added,

“We process various types of fish here—ribbonfish, Bombay duck (loitta), shrimp, catla, and more. Every season, hundreds of tons of dried fish are produced, most of which go to Cox’s Bazar, Sylhet, and Dhaka.”

According to Rafiqul, the trade has evolved beyond traditional markets. “Now we also take online orders. People are more health-conscious these days and want clean, hygienically prepared dried fish. That’s why we dry our fish on plastic sheets instead of directly on the ground—to keep them free from dust and dirt.”

The shutki industry is not just about business; it sustains hundreds of workers—men and women alike. Rokeya Begum, a female laborer working by the riverbank, said,

“We start work at six in the morning. We clean, wash, and salt the fish—all by hand. We earn about 400 to 500 taka a day. This job keeps my family going.”

Despite the importance of their work, it is not without hardship.

“The smell can make you dizzy sometimes,” Rokeya said. “The salt burns and cracks the skin on our hands. But without this job, we couldn’t survive.”

Another worker, Kamal Hossain, said, “We work seasonally. When the rains come, drying stops, and we have to find other work. But during the season, the income is good.” He noted that working conditions have improved in recent years: “We used to dry fish on muddy fields, but now there are concrete platforms—cleaner and more durable.”

Traders say that good weather and quality fish are the keys to success. Since the fish come fresh from the Karnaphuli River and the Bay of Bengal, the dried fish from this region has a unique taste. That’s why buyers from all over the country prefer Chattogram shutki.

Nurun Nabi, a local customer, said, “The dried fish from Bastuhara is excellent. Every year I buy loitta and chepa shutki from here. You can find dried fish in many places now, but the taste from this area is special.”

However, challenges remain. Traders pointed to changing weather patterns and river pollution as major concerns. Rafiqul said,

“Because of climate change, we don’t get consistent sunlight like before, so drying takes longer. Pollution in the river also affects fish quality. If the government provided modern drying machines, we could produce dried fish year-round and boost exports.”

The dried fish village of Chattogram is more than just a center of trade—it’s a lifeline for generations. Here, fishermen, laborers, and traders work side by side, turning their sweat and skill into one of Chattogram’s most traditional food products—one that carries the city’s name and flavor far beyond Bangladesh’s borders.

As the warm breeze drifts across the Karnaphuli and the scent of sun-dried fish fills the air, it carries with it the toil, dreams, and resilience of thousands. This field is not merely a place for drying fish—it is a living industry, an enduring part of Chattogram’s economy and culture.

<![CDATA[The holy month of Ramadan 2026 in the UAE will officially begin on February 19, 2026, following the successful sighting of the new crescent moon. Astronomers and official moon-sighting committees across the Emirates confirmed the lunar observation, marking the start of a month dedicated to fasting, prayer, and spiritual reflection for Muslims.

Astronomical Insights and Expected Start : According to the Emirates Astronomy Society, preliminary calculations had already suggested that Ramadan would begin on February 19. The new crescent moon was born on Tuesday, February 17, 2026, at 4:01 PM UAE time, but due to its quick setting—just one minute after sunset—it was not visible that evening. This made Thursday, February 19, the first day of fasting, a date later confirmed by the UAE Moon-Sighting Committee.

Fasting Hours in Ramadan 2026 : At the beginning of Ramadan in Abu Dhabi, fasting hours are projected to last around 12 hours and 46 minutes. By the end of the month, as daylight hours increase, fasting will extend to approximately 13 hours and 25 minutes. This gradual shift reflects the seasonal transition, with daylight stretching from 11 hours and 32 minutes to 12 hours and 12 minutes.

Weather Conditions During Ramadan: Ramadan in the UAE often coincides with seasonal changes, and 2026 is no exception. Early in the month, temperatures in Abu Dhabi are expected to range between 16°C and 28°C, influenced by lingering northern winds. Toward the end of Ramadan, with spring settling in, temperatures are forecast to rise between 19°C and 32°C. Rainfall is also possible, with average precipitation levels potentially exceeding 15 millimeters, consistent with historical seasonal patterns.

Role of the UAE Moon-Sighting Committee: The UAE Moon-Sighting Committee, chaired by Sheikh Abdullah bin Bayyah, plays a vital role in preserving tradition and ensuring lunar accuracy in the Islamic calendar. Comprised of scholars, jurists, and astronomers, the committee validates crescent sightings not only to confirm Ramadan but also to declare the end of the month with the arrival of Shawwal and the celebration of Eid Al-Fitr.

Spiritual Significance: With the official confirmation of Ramadan’s start, Muslim communities across the UAE are preparing for a month of fasting, charity, and togetherness. From nightly iftar gatherings to acts of generosity, Ramadan 2026 promises a time of spiritual renewal, family bonding, and cultural celebration across the Emirates.

<![CDATA[Due to the low pressure created in the deep Bay of Bengal, the world heritage coastal clay pots of the Sundarbans in the southwestern part of the country are on the verge of disappearing. In a short time, in a decade, as the market is full of plastic products, the clay pots are on the verge of disappearing. Especially, the water in these clay pots was always cold, which is why it was once very popular with the coastal people.

Right now, there is a lack of drinking water in the coastal areas of Bangladesh. Many people are using plastic drums because they can get them from the government and private sellers. Some receive them from the Department of Public Health Engineers, while others get them through NGOs. Because of this, traditional clay pots for storing water are disappearing.

Especially in the coastal districts of Satkhira, Khulna, Bagerhat, Pirojpur, Jhalakati, Barisal, Barguna, Patuakhali, Bhola, Chandpur, Lakshmipur, Feni, Noakhali, Chittagong and Cox's Bazar, people of this region used to use clay pots more. Clay pots or matkis have been lost over time. At one time, there were one or two of them in everyone's house, but now they are rarely seen. Rice kept in pots does not easily get insects and the smell and taste also remain intact for a long time. Moreover, since it is made of clay, no harmful elements are mixed in the rice even after being in contact with such a vessel.

According to the information of the potter's artisans, first soft clay loam soil is collected, usually from rice fields or riverbeds. That soil is well-kneaded and stored in one place. Then, a light layer of clay is taken from there and placed in a pan-shaped object to form the bottom of the pot. Then, more layers are added along the sides of that layer to form the edges of the pot. Sometimes, the rings made earlier are applied layer by layer. At this time, the joints are soaked with a wet cloth to adhere the new layer to the previous layer and polished. Sometimes, the round shape of the pot is maintained by pressing it from the inside with a small round object. Finally, a layer of the neck part like a pitcher is added. Usually, the pitchers are made on wheels, but due to the huge size of the pot, it is not possible to make it in that way.
In the 90s, many homes had big pots and jars. Back then, families didn't sell rice and paddy like they do now. Crop yields were low. Today, many different types of crops are grown. Families no longer bring crops home; they sell them to traders instead. Because of this, they don't need those pots for storing rice anymore. Now, more houses are built from bricks, both in cities and rural areas. In these homes, people only keep rice for meals, usually in metal or plastic drums. As time has passed, people's lives have improved, and due to changes in crop production, those eco-friendly pots are nearly gone.

Dr. Mohammad Sohrab Uddin, head of the Archaeology Department at Comilla University, said that long ago, many kinds of storage containers or clay pots were used in most parts of the country to hold food grains. These pots, known as matkas, were common, especially in wealthy areas. However, as time has passed and people's lives have improved, matkas have nearly disappeared.

<![CDATA[Desk Report: Roman Catholic cardinals will begin their secret conclave to elect the new leader of the global Church on May 7, the Vatican said on Monday, confirming what a source had previously told Reuters.

The date was decided during a closed-door meeting of cardinals at the Vatican, the first since the funeral of Pope Francis on Saturday.

Some 135 cardinals, all under the age of 80 and from all corners of the world, are eligible to take part in the vote for the next head of the 1.4-billion-member Church, which is beset by concerns over its finances and divisions over doctrine.

The 16th-century Sistine Chapel, where conclaves are held beneath the gaze of Michelangelo's masterpiece frescoes, was closed to tourists on Monday to ready the space for an election that mixes ancient ritual with modern, anti-spying technologies.

The previous two conclaves, held in 2005 and 2013, lasted just two days. But Swedish cardinal Anders Arborelius said on Monday that thecoming ballot may take longer, as many of the cardinals appointed by Pope Francis have never met each other.

Francis made a priority of appointing the red-hatted "Princes of the Church" from countries that had never had them, such as Myanmar, Haiti, Rwanda and Arborelius' own Sweden.

"We don't know each other," said Arborelius.

The earliest the conclave could have begun was May 6, the Vatican said. Starting it a day later means cardinals will have slightly more time for their daily general discussions ahead of the momentous ballot.

Around 190 cardinals took part in Monday's meeting, including roughly 100 electors, the Vatican said.

Among the questions raised were the issue of sexual abuse, that has rocked the Church for years, as well as the need to spread the Christian faith, relations with other religions and the qualities the new pope needed to respond to such challenges.

DIFFERING VISIONS

Francis, pope since 2013, died aged 88 on Apr 21. His funeral on Saturday and a procession through Rome to his burial place at the Basilica of St Mary Major attracted crowds estimated at more than 400,000.

German cardinal Walter Kasper told La Repubblica newspaper that the outpouring of mourning for Francis indicated that Catholics wanted the next pope to continue with his reforming style of papacy.

Francis, the first pope from Latin America, tried to open up the often staid Church to some new conversations. He allowed debate on issues such as ordaining women as clergy and outreach to LGBTQ Catholics.

"The People of God voted with their feet," said Kasper, who is 92 and will not take part in the conclave. "I am convinced that we must go ahead in the footsteps of Francis."

Cardinal Gregorio Rosa Chavez from El Salvador, echoed that sentiment: "I am sure the new pope will be as Franciscus, the same vision, the same dreams," he said, referring to Francis by his Latin name.

However, a bloc of conservative cardinals are certain to push back against this and seek a pope who reasserts traditions and reins in Francis' push for a more inclusive Church.

German Cardinal Gerhard Ludwig Mueller, who is known for his traditionalist views and often clashed with Francis, has spoken daily about the need to reverse course.

"The strength of the Church lies in the truth, not in compromises," he told La Stampa newspaper on Monday.

<![CDATA[Sun News Desk: It has been proposed to relocate the country's traditional Kamalapur railway station for the establishment of Metrorail. As a result, the existing station building will be demolished.

If the Kamalapur station is at its present location, the mega project under construction will fall behind the Dhaka Metrorail installation. The construction of a multimodal hub surrounding the station will also be hampered. That is why a Japanese company has asked to move the traditional Kamalapur railway station to the north.

It is learned that the issue was discussed at a meeting at the railway building on Tuesday. The meeting was attended by Railway Minister Nurul Islam Sujan and Prime Minister's Private Sector Adviser Salman F Rahman. A sub-working group led by Kazima Corporation , a Japanese company, presented technical aspects of the issue at the meeting . However, the meeting was informed that the final decision in this regard will be taken subject to the permission of Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina.

The country's mega project Metrorail and all its stations will be built at a height of about 13 meters above the ground. Construction work is ongoing. Metrorail starting from Uttara to Kamalapur is its last station. The last station of the metro rail is right in front of Kamalapur station.

Meanwhile, discussions have been going on for a long time about whether the Metrorail route should be changed or Kamalapur station should be shifted elsewhere. However, the railway authorities claim that the metro rail will beautify Kamalapur station. So let's change the route of Metrorail.

But the implementing company of Metrorail, Dhaka Mass Transit Company Limited (DMTCL), is reluctant to change its route. According to the company, if the Metrorail route is changed, the route will be increased by 2-3 km. It will also increase the cost.

In the end, the railway authorities agreed to move the Kamalapur station 130 meters north, according to the design of Japan's Kazima Corporation. As a result, the previous building has to be demolished. Action will be taken with the permission of the Prime Minister.

Bangladesh Railway (DG) Director General. Shamsuzzaman told the media that if Kamalapur station falls behind because of the metro rail, its beauty will no longer exist. So it is better to remove it.

In 2018, the government approved in principle the project of making a multimodal hub around Kamalapur station with public-private joint venture (PPP). Under the project, various infrastructures including hotels, shopping malls, subways and flyovers, multi-storied housing buildings will be constructed around Kamalapur station.

In this regard, the DG of Railways said, a multimodal hub will be set up around Kamalapur station, which is spread over the railway area including Shahjahanpur. Under this project, a new station will be constructed in the style of the existing Kamalapur railway station. There are plans to start work within 5 years. Implementation may take up to 10 years to complete.]]>
